Wake Forest Wants To Keep Ball Rolling

Coming off an amazing 11-3 season, Wake Forest wants to keep the ball rolling. The Demon Deacons and head coach David Clawson want to get back to that level from last year. There was no Sam Hartman at quarterback last week, but Mitch Griffis looked just fine in their Week 1 win, completing 21 of 29 passes for almost 300 yards in an easy victory.

Wake Forest wants to challenge for the ACC Conference crown, but it will not be easy. They start the season at +1600 in the ACC Title odds, which is behind even teams like Pittsburgh and Florida State.

Though Hartman has been cleared to play, just be careful. Sometimes it takes a little time for a quarterback to get going. Harman missed basically what amounted to be a month after having a blood clot removed. The Wake Forest quarterback tossed 39 touchdowns compared to just 14 interceptions. With a full complement of receivers, there is little wonder why the spread jumped the way it did.

Wake Forest had an easy time disposing of VMI at home on September 1st by a score of 44-10. Playing on the road against Vanderbilt figures to be a bit more difficult but the books do not seem to believe so. The Demon Deacons did run for more than 200 yards against VMI and may need that balance a bit more versus the Commodores.

On offense, the duo of Turner and Justice Ellison could cause a lot of problems for Vanderbilt’s defensive line. Wake Forest expects to have a solid advantage in the trenches.

The defense could be tested a bit by the Vanderbilt team. Their two “running” backs could be close to the same level as Wake Forest’s.

Vanderbilt Attempts To Win Third Straight

Head coach Clark Lea will look to pull off an upset with an improved Vanderbilt squad. Their 2-0 start featured wins against Hawaii and Elon. Both are basically below-average teams, but any wins are good ones for the Commodores.

The Commodores displayed lightning-quick offense with 105 points combined so far in two games. Mike Wright is a duel passing and running threat. He has averaged more than 100 yards rushing with almost 200 yards a game passing. Wake Forest could have a battle on its hands.

Can Wright keep the defense of Wake Forest honest with his passing ability? This is a huge challenge for Vanderbilt in a big spot. An early upset like this could have ramifications the rest of the season. Wright seems to be maturing before everyone’s eyes, and Jayden McGowan could find some room — even against the Demon Deacons’ secondary.

Vanderbilt’s projected NCAAF win total of 2.5 is low and a lock to go over already. Given their schedule and improved level of play, four or five wins is quite plausible.

Wake Forest vs Vanderbilt Prediction

ESPN’s Power Football Index projects Wake Forest to finish in the upper half of the ACC pecking order, while Vanderbilt expects to finish near the bottom of the SEC.

Wake Forest expects to hit the 35-40 point range, but can they hold Vanderbilt under 24 points? That is questionable.

Oddsmakers may be underestimating Vanderbilt at home. This game opened at 6.0 and ballooned to 13.5. Take Vanderbilt with the points.

Pick: Vanderbilt (+13.5)
