The San Francisco 49ers make a visit to their temporary home at 4:30 p.m. ET Saturday when they play the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.

Arizona (8-6) holds the third NFC wild card and can clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 2015 if it beats the 49ers and the Chicago Bears lose or tie against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is coming off a career-best 406 passing yards in last week’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
The 49ers (5-9) were eliminated from playoff contention last week just a year after winning the NFC title before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. San Francisco will start third-string quarterback C.J. Beathard with Jimmy Garappolo and Nick Mullens injured.

Beathard will be making the 11th start of his career and first since 2018. The 49ers have gone just 1-9 with Beathard running the offense.

This season, Beathard has appeared in four games. He has completed 28 of 45 passes (62.6%) for 332 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.
One bit of good news for Beathard is that All-Pro tight end George Kittle is expected to return to the lineup after missing the last eight games with a foot injury.
However, Beathard is also taking over at QB for a team that has lost three straight games and six of its last seven. The 49ers have assured themselves of being just the second team in the last 13 years to have a losing record a year after losing in the Super Bowl, joining the 2016 Carolina Panthers.
Even with Kittle back, a third-string quarterback starting for a team with nothing left to play for is not an optimal situation. Especially when the 49ers have had at least two turnovers in each of their last eight games

However, Murray had thrown for at least 250 yards only once in the previous five games. Following a hot start that put him on the periphery of the NFL MVP conversation, the mobile Murray found that throwing became tougher when defenses took extra care to make sure he stayed in the pocket.
Despite a ton on injuries, the 49ers defense has held strong all season and has done its part to try to get San Francisco back to the Super Bowl. San Francisco is fifth in the NFL in total defense and fourth against the pass.
Look for Murray to have a much more difficult time throwing this week. He managed just 230 passing yards against the 49ers in a 24-20 victory in Week 1 in San Francisco.

Who’s Gonna Score?
The chances of the Cardinals scoring the first touchdown seem good, espeically with Beathard starting at quarterback for the 49ers.
Tight end Dan Arnold has become a favored target of Murray’s as the season has gone on. Arnold looks like a good value play to score the first TD at such high odds.

Look for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to be Beathard’s security blanket and score a touchdown. The rookie has five TDs in the last seven games and his 59 receptions are the second-most by a rookie in 49ers’ history.
