The Rams are a 10-point favorite against an opponent they have had no trouble with. The Rams are 8-0 SU and 7-1 ATS against Atlanta, although the teams have met only once (2019) since 2007. The Rams were 4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS as a home favorite last season.

The Falcons were 3-4 SU, 3-3-1 ATS, as a road underdog in 2021. They were 0-4 ATS when getting seven points or more. Since 2000, teams that are favored by at least 7.5 points in Week 2 following a Week 1 loss are 20-2 SU, 7-15 ATS.

Rams Look to Regroup

The Rams defending Super Bowl champs were blown out 31-10 by Buffalo in the NFL opener, when they had only 243 yards total offense. The Bills played as if they were the likely successor to the NFL title, and the Week 1 loss lengthened the Rams’ Super Bowl odds.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for 240 yards and one touchdown, but he also threw three interceptions and was sacked seven times.

The Rams, who lost two offensive line starters in the offseason, had 52 yards rushing — 47 by Darrell Henderson — and appeared to enter Week 2 with a running back controversy. Coach Sean McVay questioned nominal starter Cam Akers’ intensity in a training camp meeting, and Akers played only 12 snaps in the opener.

Cooper Kupp was his normal self against Buffalo, with 13 receptions for 128 yards and a touchdown. Stafford, however, was unable to get the ball to offseason acquisition and No. 2 wideout Allen Robinson, who had one catch on two targets with the lowest target rate of his career.

Changes in Atlanta

The post-Matt Ryan offense is quite different but appears playable. Cordarrelle Patterson picked up where he left off last season after becoming the lead running back, and new starting quarterback Marcus Mariota added a running dimension that Ryan lacked.

Patterson had career highs with 22 carries and 120 rushing yards, and he added a touchdown. Mariota, starting for the first time since 2019 while with Tennessee,  passed for 215 yards and rushed for 72 yards and a score.

No. 1 draftee wide receiver Drake London fit immediately, with five receptions for 72 yards.

Rams OL vs Falcons DL

This matchup could be a determinant. The remade Rams’ offensive line had difficulty with fired-up Buffalo, which was playing to make a statement.

Linebacker Von Miller had two of the Bills’ seven sacks, and the Rams averaged only 2.9 yards per carry on 18 rushed, although the game script dictated more pass plays as the game went on.

The Falcons had 4 1/2 sacks against New Orleans’ Jameis Winston while sending pressure from every level, a tactic they mostly abandoned while surrendering the big lead. Atlanta had a league-low 18 sacks a year ago, never more than 3 1/2 in a game.

Defensive tackle Grady Jarrett led the team with 1 1/2 sacks.

Rams vs Falcons Injury Updates

The Rams will shuffle their offensive line after a knee injury to center Brian Allen, with Coleman Shelton moving to center and Tremayne Anchrum taking Shelton’s spot at right guard. Left tackle Joseph Noteboom (knee) is expected to play. Rams wide receiver Van Jefferson will miss his second straight game after knee surgery.

Atlanta backup halfback Damien Williams is out after suffering a rib injury in the opener.

Atlanta vs LA Rams Prediction

No defending Super Bowl champion has started 0-2 since Denver in 1999, and that is unlikely to happen here. The Rams hardly played like a title contender lsat week, however, hanging close in the first half only. because of the Bills’ three turnovers. The lack of cohesion on the offensive side was evident.

On the other side of the ball, the Rams gave up 56 yards rushing to dual-threat Josh Allen and will face the same type of quarterback in Mariota, albeit one less accomplished. The Falcons will start 0-2 for the third straight season, which will tie a franchise record but will cover the large number.

The pick: Atlanta +10 (-110)
