The Miami Dolphins lost more than their first game of the season Thursday night in Cincinnati.

The health of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is the team’s first priority. How the team manages as Tua recovers from a frightening head injury will be the other bstoryline going forward.

Miami’s three-game winning streak to start the season is over, as the Bengals evened their record at 2-2 with a 27-15 win.

Now, oddsmakers have pushed the Dolphins 2023 Super Bowl odds from their season-high of +1600, down to +2500.

After starting the year 0-2, the Bengals have worked their way back to .500, and their Super Bowl odds have shortened from +3000 heading into Week 4 down to +2200.

Tua Carted Away

You could hear a pin drop at Paycor Stadium when Tagovailoa lay on the turf after taking a second-quarter sack from Bengals’ nose tackle Josh Tupou. If you were watching the game, the video of Tagovailoa’s arms seizing up is frightening.

He was stretchered away and taken to a local area hospital. Thankfully, reports were encouraging around halftime, as Tua was conscious and had full movement of all his extremities.

With under a minute to play, it was reported he would be discharged from the medical center and likely travelling home with the team.

It’s the second straight week the Dolphins’ pivot has suffered a scary injury. Against Buffalo, a Matt Milano hit knocked Tagovailoa to the ground, and he staggered to a knee after getting up. The team called it a back injury, as he passed concussion protocol and returned to the game in the second half.

With new head coach Mike McDaniel in the fold, it appeared they had unlocked a level of play in the fifth pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. In guiding Miami to a 3-0 start, Tagovailoa was second in the NFL with 925 pass yards and a 117.8 QB rating.

He had thrown eight touchdowns to just two picks, and was completing passes at a 71% clip.

Are The Dolphins Still Worth a Wager?

Not surprising, Tagovailoa’s 2023 NFL MVP odds have been taken off the board. Entering the Week 4 matchup, he was solid in fifth spot at +1600 odds, looking up at only Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson.

It’s early, so we don’t know yet how severe Tua’s latest injury is. In his absence, the Dolphins do have a quality backup in Teddy Bridgewater.

Teddy Two-Gloves finished 14-for-22 for 193 yards, engineering a TD drive before halftime. But the offense stalled, scoring just three points the rest of the way, with a backbreaking Bridgewater pick with under four minutes to play putting this one away.

Besides that wild one against the Ravens, Miami’s defense has looked pretty impressive. They shut down Cincy’s running game Thursday, limiting Joe Mixon to 61 yards on 24 totes, and kept Joe Burrow in check for most of the night, giving their offense a chance to pull out the win.

The encouraging part is Miami’s upcoming schedule, with five straight winnable games against the Jets, Vikings, Steelers, Lions and Bears. If they can make hay during this stretch, we could be talking about an 8-1 or 7-2 Dolphins team.

The title bet ultimately hinges on Tua’s health, but if he can get right for the home stretch, Miami looks like a squad that could make some noise in the right scenario. Consider a wager on the Fins at these extended odds a very frisky value bet.
