Mahomes is a +500 favorite with the start of the season just two days away. The Chiefs open Sunday by hosting the Cleveland Browns.
New Line for Mahomes
Though the Chiefs lost to the Buccaneers in the Super Bowl to end the 2020 season in February, Mahomes opened as the 2021 MVP favorite the following day. His odds were -500 then and have held steady for seven months.
Mahomes led the Chiefs to a second straight AFC title last season. He topped the NFL with an average of 316.0 yards passing a game in the regular season and his 1.0 interception percentage was also the best in the league.
Mahomes has quite the track record for a 25-year-old.
Highest Team PPG Among Starting QB
(Since 1950 and Min. 30 Starts)1. Patrick Mahomes (31.4)
2. Lamar Jackson (30.6)
3. Tom Brady (28.2)
4. Jimmy Garoppolo (28.2)
5. Drew Brees (27.4) pic.twitter.com/r2btscyGw4— CBS Sports HQ (@CBSSportsHQ) September 3, 2021
In all, Mahomes completed 66.3% of his passes in 2020 for 4,740 yards and 38 touchdowns. He was picked off just six times in 588 attempts.
The Chiefs had the best record in the regular season a year ago when they went 14-2. However, Mahomes was harassed by the Buccaneers from start to finish in the Super Bowl, prompting the Chiefs to overhaul their offensive line in the offseason.
Left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. was acquired from the Baltimore Ravens and left guard Joe Thuney was signed as a free agent. The other three guys up front have never started a regular-season NFL game.

Mahomes has two premier playmakers to work with in wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce. However, the Chiefs could be a little thin at receiver and running back.
Rodgers Reigning MVP
Rodgers’ opening odds were +800 in February and have gone up slightly to +1000 with the Packers poised to open their season Sunday against the Hurricane Ida-displaced New Orleans Saints in Jacksonville.
The Packers reached the NFC Championship Game last season where it lost at home to the Buccaneers. The defeat dropped Rodgers’ record in NFC title games to 1-4.
However, Rodgers had an outstanding regular season as the Packers posted a 13-3 record. He led the NFL in touchdown passes (48), quarterback rating (121.6), completion percentage (70.7) and average yards per attempt (9.6).

Rodgers totaled 4,299 yards in the air and threw just five interceptions in 526 attempts. The Packers led the league in scoring with 31.8 points a game.
Rodgers has a deep wide receiver corps to work with, headed by Davante Adams, who became the first player in NFL history in 2020 to have at least 100 receptions and 18 touchdowns in the same season.
Top running back Aaron Jones was re-signed in free agency. Backup A.J. Dillon is poised to blossom in his second season.

Though not to the extent of the Chiefs, the Packers will also have a new look up front.
All-Pro center Corey Linsley left for the Los Angeles Chargers as a free agent in the offseason. All-Pro left tackle David Bakhtiari will miss at the least the first six games as he begins the season on the physically unable to perform list following reconstructive knee surgery.
The Best Bet
There is a lot of drama surrounding Rodgers, including whether this will be the last of his 17 seasons with the Packers. Rodgers skipped OTAs and minicamp this year as part of a dispute with management over what he feels is a lack of input the decision-making process.
Mahomes, on the other hand, doesn’t have any real distractions going into the season. He is the safer bet even as the chalk.
