  • Matt’s McEwen’s SBS formula has gone 18-11 this season at picking NFL upsets
  • Bettors who’ve followed the system would be showing a profit of 16.67 units so far
  • See the best upset picks the formula is calling for during Week 9 of the NFL season in the story below

For NFL bettors, hitting on an upset – succcessfully backing a team that the consensus is going against – is a profitable venture. However, it’s locating those upsets that often proves to be the biggest challenge.

Thanks to a formula created by SBD editor-in-chief Matt McEwen, NFL bettors seeking out upsets now have a leg up in that pursuit. Naturally, like any bettor with a successful system, he’s reluctant to reveal all the secrets to his success. Suffice to say, it considers a wide variety of team and player stats.

There’s no doubt that the formula is working.

McEwen is 18-11 on his upset picks through eight weeks of the NFL season. Bettors who’ve followed the path suggested each week by his formula are up 16.67 units.

Let’s look back at some of the big calls that McEwen has made this season on NFL upsets. Then we’ll talk about his best upset picks for Week 9 of the NFL season.

The Upsets Just Keep On Coming

Last week, the formula correctly called the Pittsburgh Steelers winning at Cleveland over the Browns as 3.5-point underdogs. McEwen also had the Green Bay Packers winning at Arizona at +6 against the unbeaten Cardinals.

Week 6 winners were the Cardinals (+3.5) over the Browns and the Las Vegas Raiders (+3.5) over the Denver Broncos. During Week 5, McEwen came through with the Steelers (+1.5) over the Broncos, the Browns (+2) over the Los Angeles Chargers and the Buffalo Bills (+3) over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Let’s look at each of his Week 9 upset selections.

Cleveland Browns (+2.5) over Cincinnati Bengals

The Battle of Ohio takes on added influence in the NFL odds this week. The 5-3 Bengals are just ahead of the 4-4 Browns in the ultra-tight AFC North Division.

Both teams are coming off stunning setbacks. Cleveland dropped a 15-10 decision at home to the Steelers. The Bengals were stunned 34-31 by the New York Jets and backup quarterback Mike White.

Cleveland has won two straight over Cincinnati. The Browns are also 2-1 against the Bengals in their last three visits to Paul Brown Stadium.

The Bengals are the 2.5-point home chalk. However, the SBD score predictor is also with McEwen on this pick. It’s calling for a Cleveland win by a margin of 10 points.

Green Bay Packers (+7) Over Kansas City Chiefs

The 7-1 Packers should be on a high after knocking off the unbeaten Cardinals on the road. However, Green Bay is going to Kansas City without starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He’s unavailable after entering the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols.

That’s leaving 2020 first-round draft pick Jordan Love under center to make his first career NFL start, facing Patrick Mahomes and the reigning AFC champion Chiefs.

While it seems an unlikely game to be backing the upset in the NFL betting lines, there is some merit to McEwen’s pick. Kansas City is 4-4 and isn’t looking anything like a team less than two years removed from a Super Bowl triumph. The Chiefs are 27th in the NFL in overall defense and 25th in scoring defense. They barely squeaked past the 2-6 New York Giants 20-17 on Monday Night Football last week.

The Packers drafted Love to be their quarterback of the future, much like they took Rodgers in the first round of his draft year to ultimately succeed Brett Favre. That future is now, and the SBD score predictor thinks it’s bright. It’s predicting Green Bay to win by a point.

Arizona Cardinals (+3) over San Francisco 49ers

Looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season, Cardinals QB Kyler Murray (ankle) is expected to be a game-time decision. That’s got the NFL odds backing the hometown Niners in this game.

It should be noted that McEwen’s formula doesn’t have an abundance of available data on Green Bay’s Love, or Colt McCoy, should he start for Arizona.

Even with Murray at the helm, San Fran gave the Cards all they could handle in a 17-10 Arizona win earlier this season.

The SBD score predictor likes Arizona by five points.
