We’re about to find out if Bill Belichick lore is more real than the New York Jets’ 4-game win streak.

These AFC East foes clash Sunday, on mostly uncommon terms.

New York (5-2) enters the Week 8 matchup with a better record than the Patriots (3-4). The last time this has happened this late into the season was in 2001.

New England’s dominance under Belichick has been legendary — his teams are a whopping 34-10 against Gang Green since taking over the Pats in 2000.

However, he’s not trotting out Tom Brady to shred the defense. In fact, he still hasn’t settled on who will take the reins Sunday.

Patriots vs Jets Odds

Team Moneyline Spread Total
New England Patriots -134 -2.5 (-112) Ov 40.5 (-113)
New York Jets +110 +2.5 (-109) Un 40.5 (-108)

Is anyone else surprised that the Patriots, who were just lit on fire by the offensively challenged Chicago Bears, are 2.5-point road favorites? The NFL Betting Trends are riding with the home ‘dogs, with 60% of bets against the spread on the Jets, and an even higher 77% clip on the New York moneyline.

It all gets underway Sunday (October 30) at 1pm ET, from MetLife Stadium, in a game that can be seen live on CBS.

New England Betting Outlook

There’s a distinct possibility the Patriots feature a 2-QB look again Sunday, after their Monday night 33-14 thrashing at the hands of the Bears.

Mac Jones, who’d just returned from a high ankle sprain that had him sidelined since Week 3, was yanked in the second quarter after a sluggish 3-for-6 passing effort for 13 yards and an interception.

Backup Bailey Zappe looked better, going 14-for-22 for 185 yards and a touchdown, but he was intercepted twice. While Jones is expected to start, New York is preparing for either pivot under center.

The Patriots will likely try to get their run game going, as Rhamondre Stevenson and Damien Harris combined for just 47 yards rushing on 14 totes.

Defensively, Chicago ran wild over the Patriots’ defense, carrying 45 times for 243 yards and a pair of scores.

Perhaps the outcome changes (or gets closer) if New England had just a little better turnover luck. They forced four fumbles of Justin Fields and five overall, and couldn’t recover a single ball.

New York Betting Outlook

There’s no secret formula to why the Jets are surging: they’ve got studs across the front four, and a secondary being led by 2022 Defensive Rookie of the Year favorite Sauce Gardner.

During the Jets’ win streak, they’ve held teams to 14 points per game. Their run defense allows just 105.3 yards per game (11th), while holding teams to a 3.9-yard average, which is third-best in the NFL.

The passing defense is ranked 12th, giving up 209 pass yards per contest, and a stingy six yards per play.

Where they will really be tested is with two major losses on offense. Running back Breece Hall, who was the favorite in the 2022 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds, suffered a torn ACL in their 16-9 win over the Denver Broncos. To their credit, the Jets pivoted quickly, landing James Robinson in a trade with Jacksonville to plug that void.

Their offensive line was also dealt a blow when guard Alijah Vera-Tucker suffered a torn triceps in Denver.

For the first time all year, New York may need quarterback Zach Wilson to shoulder a bigger responsibility than game manager. In four games, Wilson has thrown for 693 yards, with one TD and two interceptions.

To his credit, however, Wilson hasn’t turned the ball over since his season debut in Week 4.

Patriots vs Jets Pick

New England has dominated this matchup, having reeled off 12 straight wins in this head-to-head and have swept the two-game season series between these teams six seasons and running.

Even without Brady, the Pats are a perfect 4-0 against the Jets, with a +77 point differential. That total was juiced up in the last meeting between the two teams, a 54-13 demolition on Oct 24, in a game where Jones threw for a season-high 307 yards.

It just feels a little bit different this time around, even with New York’s injuries.

The Patriots are 0-4 ATS in their last four against AFC East opponents, and the Jets are 4-0 ATS on their current win streak.

The Pick:

  • Jets +2.5 (-109); 1 unit to win 0.92 units
  • Overall: 6-5 ATS, 1-0 O/U, -2.06 units
