  • Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy are the +225 co-favorites to be the next head coach of the New York Giants
  • Joe Judge was fired as coach of the team on Tuesday
  • The Giants are also in the market for a new GM with Dave Gettlemen announcing his retirement

After a chance to reflect on their initial decision, the brass of the New York Giants ultimately came to their senses.

There goes the Judge. Joe Judge was dismissed as coach of the team one day after the Giants were suggesting he’d be back for a third season at the helm.

As an NFL head coach Judge was like a 5-foot-5 guy in the deep end of a seven-foot swimming pool. He was in way over his head, as his 10-23 record would indicate.

Two names that seem to be at or near the top of the list whenever an NFL head coaching position comes open are being offered the best odds to be the next head coach of the Giants. A pair of talented offensive coordinators – Eric Bieniemy of the Kansas City Chiefs and Brian Daboll of the Buffalo Bills – are both listed at a betting line of +225.

SBD Odds as of January 12

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh (+425) is another top contender, while two former NFL head coaches  – Brian Flores at +675 and Doug Pederson at +725 – offer intriguing value.

First, Giants Need a GM

Before they can hire a coach, the Giants will be in the market for a GM. Dave Gettleman announced his retirement, probably to avoid the inevitable axe that was also poised precariously over his neck.

If the rumor mill is correct, it could bode well for Daboll. A name being frequently metioned in connection with the position is Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen. If Schoen were to in fact be the choice of the Giants, would be he then go with a familiar choice for coach in Daboll?

The Canadian-born Daboll is given much credit for the development into an All-Pro of Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen. Allen was viewed as a project as he arrived to the NFL from college.

The Giants are certainly going to be seeking someone who can unearth the potential in QB Daniel Jones, or in an incoming top-rated rookie should the team opt to move on from Jones.

Bieniemy Often Left at Altar

As the man at the helm the NFL’s most exposive offense over the past four seasons, it’s a bit surprising that no team has given Bieniemy a chance to run their show. Like Daboll, his name is frequently associated with NFL head coaching openings but neither of them have been able to close a deal.

Bieniemy interviewed for six of the seven NFL head coach openings in 2020 and was again pursued last offseason. That he’s never been a head coach at any level of football is one factor that may be working against him.

The other concern is that head coach Andy Reid remains the play caller in Kansas City. This is causing concern over exactly how much say Bieniemy has in the decisions behind the Chiefs offense.

Taking Another Tack

Football executives tend to operate like TV network execs. When they see a formula that works, they follow that trend. On the other hand, when something isn’t working, they run away like King Arthur’s knights in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The Giants tried promoting an NFL assistant coach in Judge and it was an unmitigated disaster. Ditto for his predecessors, Pat Shurmur and Ben McAdoo. Prior to them, the Giants hired Tom Coughlin, someone with previous NFL head-coaching experience. He won two Super Bowls for them.

Pederson also won a Super Bowl in Philadelphia, with Nick Foles at QB. With Jones and RB Saquon Barkley, the Giants figure to be seeking an offensive-minded coach. If anyone can unlock the potential in Jones, Pederson could be that guy.

Pick: Doug Pederson (+725)
