Odds Heavily Against Tom Brady Playing for Another NFL Team, Chargers Seen as Favorites Should He Leave
- Sportsbooks have props on the future of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady
- Sportsbook 1 released a yes/no wager on whether Brady will throw a pass for another NFL team
- Sportsbook 2 has odds on which team Brady will play for in 2020, with the LA Chargers the second-favorites at +275
Would it be difficult to picture Tom Brady in, say, a Los Angeles Chargers jersey? Certainly, the thought would be cringe-worthy to any New England Patriots fan.
However, the fact of the matter is that many of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks – Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, Joe Namath, Brett Favre – didn’t finish up where they started off.
Sportsbooks have released prop wagers relating to Brady’s NFL future. He is under contract to the Patriots until the end of the 2021 season, when he’ll be 44 years old.
Odds on Tom Brady’s Team in Week 1 of 2020 NFL Season
Team | Odds |
---|---|
New England Patriots | -210 |
Los Angeles Chargers | +275 |
Chicago Bears | +1200 |
Tennessee Titans | +1500 |
Retired | +210 |
Odds taken on October 29, 2019.
Someday, the Brady-Bill Belichick dynamic duo will hang up their cowls and walk into the sunset. Will that be someday soon? And will they walk off together into retirement as Patriots superheroes?

New England head coach Belichick, 67, who’s combined with Brady to win a record six Super Bowls with the Patriots, stated this week that he wants to coach past his 70th birthday. Brady insists that his only focus is in the present, on the team’s next game, and plans to leave any questions about his future to the offseason.
If the Patriots win another Super Bowl – and they are heavily favored to do so – why would Brady or Belichick want to go somewhere else?
There’s nowhere at all in the NFL where the grass would be greener.
Pick: New England Patriots (-210)

What’s it like to replace a legend? Well, why don’t you ask Scott Hunter? Or perhaps Marty Domres would like to weigh in. Damon Huard might also have an opinion on the subject.
Hunter followed Bart Starr under center with the Green Bay Packers. Domres replaced Unitas for the Baltimore Colts. Huard was next up for the Miami Dolphins when Dan Marino retired.

None of them are being fitted for Hall of Fame jackets.
New England has already allowed two heirs apparent – Jimmy Garoppolo (San Francisco 49ers) and Jacoby Brissett (Indianapolis Colts) – to take their talents elsewhere. And both are doing quite well.

No matter who ultimately replaces Brady at QB for the Patriots, it’s going to be a serious downgrade.
Besides, he’s not going anywhere next season, although there would be some perverse pleasure in watching the reaction if Manning, the only guy to beat Brady twice in the Super Bowl, were to take over at the helm of the Patriots offense.
Pick: Tom Brady (-210)

Brady reiterated again on Monday that his personal plan is to play until he’s 45. That puts him playing through the 2022 NFL season.
The oldest quarterback to start a game in the NFL was Steve DeBerg. He was 44 at the time. He was on the roster of the Atlanta Falcons but started just one game during the 1998 season, his farewell NFL campaign.

Warren Moon was also an NFL starter for one game at age 44 with the 2000 Kansas City Chiefs. Vinny Testaverde, Brady’s backup with the 2006 Patriots, started six games for the 2007 Carolina Panthers, also after celebrating his 44th birthday.

The granddaddy of NFL QBs was George Blanda. He attempted three passes for the Oakland Raiders in 1975 at age 48 but was 41 when he started his last NFL game at QB in 1968.
Obviously, Brady, obsessive about his diet and conditioning, wants to beat them all and be a full-time #1 QB until he’s 45. It’ll check off another box on the resume of the GOAT.
Pick: 2022 (+200).

Unitas finished his career with the Chargers, Namath with the Los Angeles Rams, Montana with the Chiefs. Favre went to the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings.
Brady’s house is for sale. His trainer, Alex Guerrero, also sold his house. Plus Brady has an out in his contract to become a free agent after this season.

He may not leave at the end of this season but Brady is a football lifer. If the Patriots decide to move on, he’ll move elsewhere to keep playing.
Pick: Yes (+1000)
