  • Edge rusher Nick Bosa (#2, San Francisco 49ers) is the early Defensive Rookie of the Year favorite
  • Tackle Quinnen Williams (#3, New York Jets) has the second-best odds
  • Only two interior lineman have won Defensive Rookie of the Year since 1995

The first defensive player off the board in the NFL Draft was Nick Bosa (Ohio State) at #2 to the San Francisco 49ers. Joey’s little brother is now listed as the favorite to win the 2019 Defensive Rookie of the Year.

2019 Defensive Rookie of the Year Odds

Will the following players win 2019 NFL DPOY? “Yes” odds “No” odds
Nick Bosa (EDGE, 49ers) +200 -300
Quinnen Williams (DT, Jets) +500 -800
Josh Allen (EDGE, Jaguars) +600 -1200
Clelin Ferrell (EDGE, Raiders) +1000 -2000

*odds taken 4/29

Somewhat surprisingly, oddsmakers are allowing bettors to take the YES and NO on each player in their DPOY prop.

There are two bets in particular worth taking a long look at, one player to win and one player to fade.

Nick Bosa Is the Favorite for a Reason

Nick Bosa fell into the 49ers lap when the Arizona Cardinals selected a quarterback in the 1st round for the second straight year.  Bosa was a beast at Ohio State, finishing with 29 tackles for loss in 29 games as a Buckeye. He should star immediately on a 49er defensive line that is desperate for an elite pass rusher.

Bosa has exceptional size and speed and should rack up the stats that award voters will be looking for.

Another reason to like Bosa? He’s been able to equal his brother Joey every step of the way and this should be no exception. The Chargers’ defensive end was selected 3rd overall in 2016 and won the award. Now his brother Nick was selected 2nd and has a chance to keep pace.

Getting +200 on the player I think is a considerable favorite is reasonable value.

PICK: NICK BOSA: YES (+200)

Fade Quinnen Williams from the Jets

Landing a talent like Quinnen Williams at #3 is something very rare.  When the Jets tried to move down but couldn’t find a taker, they ultimately made the right decision by drafting the best player on the board, even though he doesn’t exactly fit a need.

So if I love Williams as a player, why the rush to fade him? His position mostly.

He is a massive force in the middle of the line, but the fact is, it just isn’t a very sexy position that lends itself to winning DPOY.

Since 1995, only two interior lineman have won the Rookie of the Year: Aaron Donald in 2014 and Ndamukong Suh in 2010.  Most years, you’ll see a player racking up sacks or interceptions winning the hardware. Williams won’t be able to do either of those things in the middle of the line.

It will cost you a big time investment but that’s what this is, more an investment than a wager.  Take someone in the field to win the award over Williams for -800 and try not to sweat the price tag.

PICK: QUINNEN WILLIAMS: NO (-800)
