Not so long ago, this matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots was projecting to be another TNF dud to haunt the 2021 NFL regular season. Then the Patriots turned back into the Patriots, and everything changed.

New England has won four games in a row. Not only are the 6-4 Pats a leading contender in the AFC Wild Card race, they are nipping at the heels of the AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills.

Atlanta, meanwhile, continues to stumble. Falling to 4-5 on the season, the Falcons are 3-2 in over the past five games. Twice they’ve pulled to .500 on the season, only to lose their next game.

The Patriots are coming to Atlanta as 5.5-point road favorites. The Falcons are 0-3 against the spread at home this season and 0-2 ATS as a home underdog.

New England Patriots Betting Trends

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was at his game planning wizardry best in dismantling the Cleveland Browns 45-7 on Sunday. The Browns scored on their first possession. Then the New England defense applied the clamps.

Ending the day with just 217 yards of total offense, the Browns were 1-for-11 on third-down conversions.

During New England’s current four-game winning streak, rookie quarterback Mac Jones keeps improving. Sunday, Jones hit career highs for completion percentage (82.6), passing touchdowns (three) and passer rating (142.1). Jones is the first Patriots rookie QB to throw TD in a game since Drew Bledsoe in 1993.

Meanwhile, Rhamondre Stevenson is the latest in a long line of come out of nowhere rushing sensations for New England. The rookie fourth-round draft pick finished the day averaging five yards per carry (20 carries for100 yards total), while scoring two touchdowns.

Atlanta Falcons Betting Trends

Knowing that the 7-2 Dallas Cowboys were coming off their worst game of the season, it figured to be a rough Sunday for the Falcons. And it most certainly was that.

The Atlanta defense remains one of three NFL teams that hasn’t allowed a 300-yard passing game this season. That’s only because the Cowboys got so far ahead in their 43-3 drubbing of Atlanta that coach Mike McCarthy opted to empty his bench.

The Falcons were 3-1 straight up and against the spread over their past four games to slip back into the playoff race. However, that light at the end of the tunnel only proved to be an oncoming train in the form of the Cowboys.

To add insult to injury, Dallas presented the game ball to defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. He was fired as head coach of the Falcons last season.

Falcons-Patriots Line Movement

Facing playoff contenders, Sunday was a litmus test for both of these teams. New England passed with flying colors. The Falcons got their wings clipped and then were cooked for dinner.

If you want another comparable, New England has also faced Dallas this season. The Patriots lost 35-29 in overtime to the Cowboys on October 17. That’s their only setback over the past six games.

That New England is already opening as the 5.5-point road chalk makes further line movement unlikely. Atlanta isn’t a very good team, but Falcons QB Matt Ryan is still capable of an upset.
