Tonight’s Monday Night Football matchup between the Patriots and Cardinals is a must win for New England. The Pats (6-6, 3-3 away) can take over the final AFC playoff spot with a victory, but will still face an uphill battle to make the postseason.

That’s because their final three games are against the Bengals, Dolphins and Bills, who are all among the top-six AFC teams.

Arizona meanwhile, is virtually a lock to miss the postseason. The Cards (4-8, 1-6 home) have underachieved all season and bettors are expecting another disappointing effort on MNF.

New England is drawing the majority of the spread money per the NFL public betting trends, prompting online sportsbooks to react. The spread has moved 1.5 points in the Patriots favor since Saturday, and the line movement may not be done yet.

Patriots vs Cardinals ATS Betting Splits

The Patriots opened as 2-point favorites, but by the time the weekend rolled around they were down to -1 at some online sportsbooks. Bettors clearly saw value on New England at that number, and have been wagering on them ever since.

As of Monday afternoon, 54% of the spread money is backing the Patriots -2.5, and that handle is coming from 49% of the ATS tickets.

There’s an argument to be made for both teams if you want to follow the trends. New England is 7-3-1 against the spread following a loss since the start of last season, including 3-1-1 in 2022. Bill Belichick teams are 62-34-1 ATS after a defeat during his coaching career, although Tom Brady was playing QB for most of those contests.

In terms of head-to-head history, the nod goes to the Pats as well. New England is 4-1 ATS in their last five matchups versus Arizona per the Patriots vs Cardinals picks.

Kyler Murray and co. on the other hand, have performed admirably as underdogs over the past two seasons. Arizona is 11-4 against the spread when catching points during that timeframe, and 2-1 ATS as home ‘dogs in 2022.

The trends may point to an even matchup, but the advanced analytics do not. New England ranks 18 spots higher per DVOA than Arizona, and have a major advantage on defense. The Pats are DVOA’s third ranked defense, while the Cards rank 24th on that side of the ball and 29th on offense.

New England vs Arizona Total Betting Splits

New England’s offensive rating isn’t much better at 24th, although there is optimism they’ll be able to find success against Arizona’s abysmal defense.

Perhaps that’s why over 43.5 points is getting so much love. The over is currently drawing 60% of all money wagered on the total, and 51% of the over/under bets.

NFL Bottom-6 Pass Defenses Per DVOA

Rank Team
32. Chicago Bears
31. Jacksonville Jaguars
30. Las Vegas Raiders
29. Atlanta Falcons
28. New York Giants
27. Los Angles Rams

The Cards are especially vulnerable against tight ends, which makes Hunter Henry an appealing target in the Patriots vs Cardinals player props. Arizona is allowing a league-high 73 receiving yards per game to that position, and an outrageous 83% reception rate.

Each of the Cardinals past six games have cleared the total, while all but three of their contests have reached 44 points. New England is more prone to lower scoring games, as the under is 4-1 in their past five outings.

Both teams are down starting receivers as noted in the Patriots vs Cardinals injury report. Jakobi Meyers is out for the Pats, while the Cards will be missing Rondale Moore.

Patriots vs Cardinals Moneyline Betting Splits

As far as the moneyline market goes, Arizona is actually drawing more money and tickets as +115 underdogs. Unlike the majority of the recent Monday Night Football games, the spread for this contest is tight, which means neither team is likely tied up in a bunch of moneyline parlays.

When that’s the case, the public will generally flock to the ‘dog in hopes of a bigger payout on their straight bets. Buyer beware however, as the Cardinals have been terrible at home in 2022. Arizona is 1-6 straight up, while New England has won two of its past three away games.
