Redskins Freefall Continues With Week 5 Loss to Patriots

Things continued to go from bad to worse for Washington in Week 5. Entering Sunday’s date with the Patriots riding a six-game SU losing streak, the Redskins were dominated by the reigning Super Bowl champions while failing to cover as 16.5-point home underdogs, continuing their freefall and setting the stage for the firing of head coach Jay Gruden on Monday morning.

The revolving door under center continued to swing in the nation’s capital, with veteran Colt McCoy getting the start in Sunday’s contest. However, McCoy has proven to be as ineffective as Case Keenum and rookie Dwayne Haskins were over the first four weeks of the season, further deepening the Redskins’ crisis under center.

McCoy has proven to be as ineffective as Case Keenum and rookie Dwayne Haskins were over the first four weeks of the season, further deepening the Redskins’ crisis under center.

Anointed as the team’s starter back in August, McCoy mustered just 119 passing yards and failed to find the end zone while getting sacked six times by a New England defense that limited Washington to just 11 first downs on the day.

Highlights Outweighed by Dismal Performances on Both Sides of the Ball

The Redskins did provide their weary fans with a few reasons to cheer. Steven Sims accounted for over a quarter of the team’s total yardage on the day with a 65-yard run for a touchdown to open the scoring. The Washington defense also made life difficult for Tom Brady at times, sacking the 42-year-old Patriots pivot on four occasions, and intercepting one pass.

But on the whole, it’s tough to get enthusiastic about the Redskins traveling to South Florida as betting chalk. An anemic Washington attack has tallied just 10 total points over their past two outings.

In addition, the team has topped 16 points just once in their past five road games, while the Redskins defense sits ahead of only Miami with 29.5 points per game allowed this season.

Rosen Provides Hope for Winless Dolphins

Miami, the other winless squad in next weekend’s Futility Bowl has also been simply terrible this season, getting outscored by a wide 163-26 margin during a 0-4 SU start. However, there is one reason to be hopeful that the Dolphins can kickstart there moribund offense when they return to action next weekend following a bye in Week 5.

Second-year quarterback Josh Rosen has performed admirably since taking over from veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, who crashed and burned in the first two outings of the season. Rosen entered the bye week after completing 70.8% of his pass attempts and connecting on one scoring toss in Miami’s 30-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Rosen’s Stats Colored by Inept Targets

Those numbers could have been far better if Rosen’s targets had gotten the job done. Miami receivers have infuriated fans by regularly blowing touchdown passes this season, and have dropped over 8% of targets so far on the year.

Rosen could also use a little help from his offensive line, which allowed him to be sacked four times by the Chargers, and 11 times overall this season. This has contributed to the team’s dismal second-half performance this season, getting outscored 81-0 after recess through four outings.

Give Edge to Well-Rested Dolphins

However, following a timely bye, the Dolphins offense could be poised for a breakthrough against a Redskins squad that has scored just 12 total points after halftime over the past three weeks. Miami also owns a surprisingly respectable record when pegged as home underdogs by four or fewer points, going 3-4 SU and 3-3-1 ATS in their past seven.

The narrative is set to change for one of these winless teams next Sunday. The Redskins could step up in support of offensive line coach Bill Callahan, who is expected to take over the coaching reins from Gruden at least on an interim basis.

But the edge must go to the well-rested home squad that is committed to a quarterback. As a result, expect the Dolphins to maintain their momentum in the Week 6 odds, and possibly continue to close the gap on Washington as the week progresses.
