  • The San Francisco 49ers are 2.5-point home favorites over the Seattle in an NFL Week 4 clash between these NFC West rivals on Sunday, October 3
  • Sunday Betting Record: 0-0 ML; 0-4 ATS; 0-0 O/U; -4 units
  •  Seattle has won three of its last four meetings with the 49ers

Is it too early into the NFL season to declare Sunday’s game at San Francisco against the 49ers as a must-win scenario for the Seattle Seahawks?

In reality, the answer to that question is probably yes. However, the numbers would seem to suggest otherwise.

At 1-2 on the campaign, and with both the 3-0 Los Angeles Rams and the 3-0 Arizona Cardinals facing each other this weeked, another setback figures to leave Seattle three games out of first place after four games played. Considering how well the Rams and Cardinals are playing, that could prove a hill too steep to climb.

Oddsmakers, though, are doubling Seattle’s chances. It’s the hometown 49ers who’ve been set as the 2.5-point favorites in this game. The Seahawks are 5-1 straight up in their past six visits to San Francisco

Seahawks vs 49ers Odds

Team Moneyline Spread Total
Seattle Seahawks +112 +2.5 (-114) O 51.5 (-114)
San Francisco 49ers -132 -2.5 (-106) U 51.5 (-106)

Odds as of October 2nd at FanDuel.

Kickoff for Sunday’s contest at Levi’s Stadium is 4:05pm ET. There is rain in the forecast, along with 11 mph wind and a temperature of 82 degrees.

Line Dancing

There’s been slight movement on the line in this game. The opening line of San Francisco -3 has shortened to 49ers -2.5. Action has seen 84% of the bets placed against the spread put on the 49ers.

San Fran’s moneyline is also showing change, going from -150 to -132. Seattle’s moneyline shortened from +130 to +112. That 86% of the moneyline bets are on the Seahawks would explain this movement.

The under is getting 86% of the public bets. That’s helped to lower the total from 52.5 to 51.5.

49ers Running Out Of Running Backs

The San Francisco run game is the epitome of the next man up philosophy. The Niners are tied for second the NFL in rushing touchdowns, despite being down to their third choice running back.

Raheem Mostert was the club’s leading rusher when the 49ers went to the Super Bowl in 2019. He’s out for the season following surgery for chipped knee cartilage.

In Mostert’s place, rookie Elijah Mitchell rambled for 104 yards on the ground in San Fran’s season-opening win at Detroit. However, he’s an uncertain starter due to a shoulder injury. San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that Mitchell’s availability on Sunday will come down to his ability to tolerate pain.

That leaves 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo handing the ball off to another rookie, former Ohio State state star Trey Sermon. In last week’s 30-28 loss to the Green Bay Packers in his first NFL start, Sermon was limited to 31 yards on 10 carries.

Will Anyone Come To Seahawks’ Defense?

There’s no D in Seattle, whether you’re talking spelling or football.  The Seahawks are allowing 440.3 yards per game. That’s the worst in the NFL.

Seattle’s defense has spent 155 plays on the field the past two weeks, compared to 102 plays for the Seahawks offense. Minnesota held the ball for nearly 36 minutes in last Sunday’s win over Seattle.

That doesn’t bode well facing a 49ers offense averaging 28.7 points and 348.7 yards per game.

Injury Report

For the 49ers, Mitchell is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. Mitchell is also the club’s first choice as kick returner.

Further concern for the San Francisco offense stems from the fact that tight end George Kittle (calf) is also questionable. On defense, left defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw (knee) is questionable and right cornerback K’waun Williams (calf) is out.

The Seahawks are dealing with their own injury issues on offense. Wide receiver Tyler Lockett (hip) is questionable. Right tackle Brandon Shell (ankle), TE Gerald Everett (COVID) and RB Rashaad Penny (calf) are out.

Trendspotting

Three of the last five Seahawks-49ers games were decided by a field goal. The last two games played in San Francisco went to overtime.

In successive weeks, Seattle has blown a 17-7 lead at Minnesota and a 30-16 advantage at home to Tennessee. San Francisco rebounded from a 17-0 hole in last week’s 30-28 loss to Green Bay.

Pick: San Francisco 49ers -2.5 (-106),  1 unit.
