The Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers were expected to be headed in totally different directions this season.

After the two teams clash Sunday, potentially it’ll be Seattle going 2-and-0, and the 49ers 0-2, which nobody expected.

Having said that, San Fran has a big leg up in the eyes of oddsmakers as they host their NFC West rivals at Levi’s Stadium as 9-point favorites when things kick off at 4:05pm ET on Sunday, September 18th. The game will air on FOX.

According to the Week 2 NFL Betting Trends, 81% of the bets are actually on the underdog Seahawks to cover the spread. 59% of the bets are on Kyle Shanahan and co. to win outright, however.

Points aren’t expected to come in droves on Sunday, with the total set at 40.5.

Just like their Week 1 contest that saw a lot of rain in Chicago, there’s a 60% chance of rain in the 49ers home opener along with wind gusts over 20 miles per hour. Temperatures are expected to be around 70 degrees at game time.

Seahawks Betting Outlook

In the first half of the Seahawks’ 17-16 stunning Monday Night Football victory over the Broncos, Geno Smith did his best Russell Wilson impression, slicing and dicing Denver’s D to the tune of completing 17-of-18 passes for 164 yards and two TD’s.

Seattle’s young offensive line held up relatively well, as they were just the third team in the last 50 years to start a pair of bookend offensive tackles (Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas) in Week 1. Smith was relatively clean in the pocket, getting sacked just twice.

Smith distributed the ball well to seven different receivers, and got his tight ends involved, with both Will Dissly and Colby Parkinson snagging TD’s. The Hawks will also be getting reinforcements returning in a pair of offensive players.

Pete Carroll is known to prefer a ground and pound style, yet Rashaad Penny only rushed twelve times (for 60 yards) in Week 1. With rookie second-rounder Ken Walker III good to go (hernia), expect more of a run-heavy affair.

Seattle has a relatively clean bill of health, minus star safety Jamal Adams being placed on injured reserve. Slot cornerback Justin Coleman (calf), may not be able to go, which would likely thrust rookie fourth-round pick Coby Bryant into action.

49ers Betting Outlook

It’s hard to fully gauge how the Trey Lance era at quarterback will go, based on the sloppy field conditions at Soldier Field last weekend. Nevertheless, the 2021 third overall pick wasn’t lighting the world on fire, going 13-for-28 for 164 yards, no TD’s, one INT and 13 carries for 54 yards.

A massive weapon could be returning to aid in his Week 2 affair with the bitter rival Seahawks, as George Kittle (groin), is listed as questionable. The 49ers star tight end didn’t play in week 1, which led to the Niners other TE’s (Ross Dwelley and Tyler Kroft) accounting for just two catches for 20 yards.

With running back Elijah Mitchell going down for two months (sprained MCL) expect even more Deebo Samuel. He rushed it eight times for 52 yards and a TD in Week 1, and caught just two passes for 14 yards.

San Fran doesn’t have a slew of other injuries that will prevent them from competing hard, which is reflected by the rather generous nine-point spread.

Seahawks vs 49ers Pick

Since Kyle Shanahan became Head Coach of the 49ers, Pete Carroll has been his bugaboo. In ten meetings, the Seahawks veteran coach has gotten the better of Shanahan eight times.

In three of the last four instances, the ‘Hawks won by a touchdown or more – of course, that was with Russell Wilson at the helm.

While it’s not realistic to expect Geno Smith to suddenly turn into a Hall of Famer overnight and play like he did in the first half against Denver, he’ll be able to keep the game close. The 49ers are playing in their own barn and went to the NFC title game a year ago. They should win, but Seattle can absolutely keep it close and cover the points.

The Pick: Seahawks +9 (-110); 2 units to win 1.82 units

Record: 1-1; Overall for -0.08 units
