  • Oddsmakers list LA Rams WR Cooper Kupp as the +145 favorite to win Comeback Player of the Year
  • San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo has the second-best odds at +180
  • Last year, Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck was the NFL CPOY

The Los Angeles Rams came up short last season in their bid for Super Bowl rings, but this season, they could have a Kupp winner in their midst.

Oddsmakers list Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp as the +145 favorite to win the 2019 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award. Kupp missed the second half of last season due to a knee injury.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is the second betting choice in this market at odds of +180.

Odds taken on November 6, 2019.

Garoppolo was the +325 favorite when the first NFL CPOY odds came out in late August. At the time, Kupp was the 10th betting choice at +1800.

Kupp Catching On

Things were going so well for Kupp to begin the 2018 NFL season. The sophomore receiver won a starting assignment alongside Robert Woods and Brandin Cooks. In Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings, Kupp posted career highs with 162 receiving yards and two touchdown catches.

Two weeks later,  he injured his knee against the Denver Broncos. He missed two games. Shortly after returning to action, Kupp went down on the field without contact during a game against the Seattle Seahawks. An MRI the next day diagnosed a torn ACL, and his season was over.

He returned in time for the Rams’ season opener against the Carolina Panthers and resumed his starting role in Week 2, facing the New Orleans Saints.

Kupp currently stands third among NFL receivers with 792 yards in receptions. He’s also pulled in five TD catches. The third-year wideout has surpassed 100 yards in five of eight games. In his most recent start, Kupp established a new career high with 220 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals.

He’s on pace for 116 catches, 1,584 yards, 10 TD.

Garoppolo Still Perfect

The 8-0 Niners are the last unbeaten team left standing in the NFL. The fact that Garoppolo is the QB of that team has to mean something.

Certainly, from an individual standpoint, Garoppolo’s numbers aren’t as awe-inspiring as Kupp’s. He’s 21st among NFL QBs in passing yardage (1,806) and owns a TD-to-INT ratio of 13:7.

San Francisco’s addition of wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders from Denver, another NFL CPOY contender, finally gives Garoppolo a downfield threat, though. His digits could grow exponentially over the second half of the season.

Frederick Deserves Consideration

Both Kupp and Garoppolo are coming back from serious knee injuries. While that’s definitely noble, it’s not all that uncommon on the gridiron.

The rebound that Dallas Cowboys center Travis Frederick has made is astonishing. He missed all of last season with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, an autoimmune disorder. At one point, he had no feeling in his feet.

He’s back as a starter this season. Frederick has played every snap and allowed just one sack.

Does Record Matter?

When assessing the NFL CPOY candidates, should the team’s record be a factor?

After losing Kupp last season, the Rams still went to the Super Bowl. After losing Garoppolo to his knee injury in Week 3, the 49ers went 3-10.

Receivers have won two of the last three NFL CPOY, so odds do favor Kupp in that respect. On the other hand, seven of the last 11 winners were QBs.

Pick: Jimmy Garoppolo (+160)
