The Chicago Blackhawks will look to turn in a much better effort when they face the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center on Thursday, March 11th, 2021. Not exactly how Patrick Kane envisioned his 1000th NHL game to go on Tuesday night when Chicago lost 6-1 to Dallas. Chicago is being listed as +127 underdogs in the Blackhawks vs Stars odds.

Tuesday’s clash between the two Central Division foes marked the first time in six meetings that the “under” failed to cash. Will we see the trend return for Thursday’s rematch?

Blackhawks Will Be Better

There’s nowhere to go but up for Chicago after underwhelming in Patrick Kane’s 1,000th career NHL game against Dallas on Tuesday. The Blackhawks only put 21 shots on goaltender Anton Khudobin and were dominated from the get-go in an eventual 6-1 defeat. Jeremy Colliton should have his team rebound with a much more inspired effort in Thursday’s rematch.

Another reason to expect a closer game on Thursday is because Kevin Lankinen is expected to be back in the crease instead of Malcolm Subban. Lankinen is a front-runner in the Calder Trophy odds and has been sensational this season with a .917 save percentage in 17 starts. Subban is a capable backup goalie, but he’s had some rough outings of late and doesn’t exude as much confidence as his younger counterpart.

Stars Flexing Defensive Muscles

Dallas is starting to turn things around after a brutal stretch in February that saw them lose 10 of 11 games. The Stars are 2-0-1 in their last three games and have allowed one or fewer goals in two of those contests. They’re once again one of the league’s best teams defensively and held Chicago to just three high-danger chances Tuesday.

Part of the reason the Stars have been so tough to score against is due to the solid goaltending tandem of rookie Jake Oettinger and veteran Anton Khudobin. Both goalies are sporting a .916 save percentage and are keeping each fresh by splitting crease time.

While the Stars exploded offensively against the Blackhawks, they’ve had trouble finding the back of the net for most of the season. The Stars have been held to one or no goals on six different occasions this season and are only averaging 28.4 shots per game — the sixth-lowest amount in the NHL.

Bet On Low-Scoring Rematch

Tuesday’s game may have been the rare exception, but there’s never much offense when these two teams do battle. The “under” has cashed in five of the last six meetings and should hit once again Thursday with Lankinen set to return. The 25-year-old goalie had one of his best games of the season vs Dallas earlier this year, turning away 34 of 35 shots in a 2-1 victory.

The Dallas defense led by John Klingberg and Miro Heiskanen has done a great job at limiting Blackhawks’ stars Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat in three prior meetings and should keep that trend going Thursday. Chicago’s second-ranked power-play is a concern, but the Stars penalty kill is operating at 79 percent efficiency and has pitched shutouts in six of the last nine games.

The Blackhawks’ defense should clean up some of their sloppy play from Tuesday, and the team will benefit from Lankinen getting the nod in goal. The Stars are allowing the fewest amount of high-danger chances in the league, and their shutdown defense will be the primary reason Thursday’s game should be yet another low-scoring affair between these two clubs.

Pick: Under 5.5 (-122)
