The Vancouver Canucks have pushed the defending Stanley Cup champion St.Louis Blues to the brink of elimination. Vancouver will take a 3-2 series lead into Game 6 on Friday, August 21st at 9:30 PM EST.

Despite being one win away from moving on to Round 2, the Canucks still aren’t being given much love by oddsmakers.

Vancouver has opened as a +114 underdog in the Game 6 Blues vs Canucks odds, marking the sixth straight game they are being listed as the underdog to St. Louis.

Will the Canucks eliminate the Blues in Game 6, or should you bet on there being a Game 7?

St. Louis Blues vs Vancouver Canucks Game 6 Odds

Team Moneyline Puckline Total at DraftKings
St. Louis Blues -132 -1.5 (+205) O 5.5 (+104)
Vancouver Canucks +114 +1.5 (-250) U 5.5 (-125)

Odds as of August 20th

While Vancouver is an underdog for the sixth straight game, their odds for Game 6 are the best individual odds they’ve seen in this series to date. Just a few days ago, they were +130 underdogs to the Blues in the Game 5 odds.

Markstrom Propels Canucks to Game 5 Victory

Vancouver goalie Jacob Markstrom turned in one of his best performances of the postseason to lead the Canucks past the Blues by a 4-3 score in Game 5.

Markstrom stopped 36 of 39 shots, including several highlight-reel saves in the second period, to help Vancouver rally from a 3-1 deficit.

The Canucks got goals from Tyler Motte (2), J.T. Miller and Jake Virtanen in the victory, while Brayden Schenn, Ryan O’Reilly and Zach Sanford scored for St. Louis. Vancouver has been mainly been carried by their superstars in this series, so it’s important that their depth guys got on the board in Game 5.

Jake Allen was terrific in goal for the Blues in Games 3 & 4, but he got exposed by Vancouver’s offense in Game 5. Allen gave up four goals on 30 shots in the defeat, raising questions about whether the Blues may decide to turn back to starter Jordan Binnington for Game 6.

Blues Power Play Catching Fire

After the Canucks’ power play dominated the first two games of the series, the Blues’ power play has blossomed over the last two games. St. Louis has gone 3-for-7 with the man advantage in Games 4 & 5, while Vancouver’s power play has gone 0-for-10 in the same span. The Canucks scored six power-play goals in the first three games, while the Blues only netted two.

Both Vancouver and St. Louis had top-five power play units during the regular season, so it’s no surprise special teams has played a major role in this series. The one area that Vancouver is proving to have the edge is goaltending. They Canucks have been outshot in every game and wouldn’t have been able to form a comeback in Game 5 if it weren’t for the play of Markstrom (.927 postseason save percentage).

Will St. Louis Force a Game 7?

This series has been so tightly matched that a Game 7 almost seems inevitable. Two of the games have gone to overtime and no team has beaten the other by more than two goals since Vancouver won 5-2 in Game 1.

The Blues are no strangers to facing pressure in the postseason. They faced elimination in three different games during their 2019 Stanley Cup run and know how to perform when their backs are against the wall.

One concerning storyline for Vancouver is that workhorse blueliner Alex Edler took a skate to the face during the second period of Game 5 and didn’t return.

Markstrom is the reason to believe in Vancouver winning the series, but I’m siding with an experienced Blues team that has been in this situation before when it comes to Game 6.

Pick: St. Louis Blues Moneyline (-132)
