  • Cross-river rivals, the Devils and Rangers face off against one another on Monday, December 12th
  • New Jersey has surprised with the second-best record in the NHL through one-third of the season
  • All the Devils vs Rangers odds can be seen below, plus our best bet and pick for this game

If you think it’s inevitable that the New Jersey Devils are going to eventually fall back to reality, you may have to think again. One-third of the way through this season and the Devils are still owners of the second-best record in the league as they travel to Broadway to take on the Rangers on Monday, December 12th.

Faceoff for this year’s second edition of the cross-river rivalry goes at 7:00 pm ET from Madison Square Garden. You can watch this game on MSG and NHL Network. The Devils are slight -117 favorites in the NHL odds as they attempt to halt the Rangers’ three-game win streak.

We analyze the Devils vs Rangers odds below while sorting through which bet makes the most sense and provides the most value.

It’s not quite a pick’em, but it’s close when you calculate the implied win probability for each team in this contest. It’s 53.92% for the Devils with moneyline odds of -117, but it’s just slightly lower at 51.22% for the Rangers.

New Jersey Devils Providing Huge Moneyline Profit

What a fortune could have been made if you’d been laying bets on the moneyline for every Devils game so far this year. New Jersey is providing the second-best return on income of any team in the league when you pick them to win straight up. They’re 20-6 with an ROI of 37.12% when you pick them on the moneyline.

No team has made a bigger jump in the Stanley Cup odds, as the Devils NHL betting line has shortened from about +6500 in the pre-season to they’re current odds of about +1200. They currently sit in the same company as the top five teams in the league with that betting number.

Surprisingly, they’ve been even better on the road than they have at home this year. With a record of 11-1-0, the Devils easily own the best road record in the league. What makes that stat even more interesting? Their only road loss came in their season opener to the Flyers. That’s right, they’re currently on an 11-game road winning streak.

Great Goalie Matchup in Devils vs Rangers Odds

After an incredible season where he was one of the finalists in the Hart Trophy odds, Igor Shesterkin has come back to reality somewhat this year. It’s still somewhat telling that the Rangers have a 13-4-4 with him in the net, and are just 1-6-1 when Jaroslav Halak gets the call between the pipes.

When the Rangers host the Devils in the Monday NHL odds, Shesterkin is expected to be in the crease for the Rangers while Vitek Vanecek gets the call for the Devils. In his first season away from Washington, Vanecek has provided everything the Devils could’ve wished for and more.

Devils vs Rangers Projected Starting Goalies

Team Goalie Record SV% GAA
New Jersey Devils Vitek Vanecek 12-2-1 .916 2.30
New York Rangers Igor Shesterkin 13-4-4 .917 2.50

For goalies with a minimum of 15 games played, the Czech netminder sits second in the league in goals-against average and top 10 in save percentage as well. He would’ve been the biggest reach in the Vezina Trophy odds at the start of the season, but now appears to be a legitimate contender for the award.

Vanecek is coming off one of his worst outings of the season though. He got pulled in a 6-4 loss to the Islanders after giving up four goals on just 17 shots. That was only the third time he gave up four or more goals in a game this season.

Devils vs Rangers Pick & Prediction

We mentioned the Devils’ impressive road record earlier, but what we’ve failed to mention are the Rangers’ struggles at home so far. They have just five wins from 15 games at Madison Square Garden so far. Only three teams in the whole league have fewer wins at home this season.

The only previous meeting between these two was a 5-3 Devils road win back a couple weeks ago in Manhattan.

It’s been a long time since New Jersey was the chalk in the Devils vs Rangers odds when these teams have faced off at MSG. The Blueshirts have been the better squad for a few years now, but the tide slowly seems to be changing.

Our prediction in the NHL odds is to continue the trend with the Devils to win on the road. Pick New Jersey on the moneyline to win their 12th road game in a row against a Rangers side that can’t find the right formula to win at home.

Pick: New Jersey Devils Moneyline (-117)
