There are few months as busy as October on the sports calendar, and that’s about to be amplified starting Tuesday as the NHL drops the puck on a new season.

Opening night of 2022-23 features just two contests, as the Lightning visit the Rangers, and the Golden Knights face the Kings. The latter matchup captures our attention from a betting perspective, as LA opened up as the home chalk in the NHL odds.

Las Vegas Golden Knights Betting Analysis

There’ll be a new man behind the bench for Las Vegas, as Bruce Cassidy takes over for Peter DeBoer. Cassidy won coach of the year honors with the Bruins in 2020, but was fired by Boston after an early playoff exit last season.

Robin Lehner, a staple between the Golden Knights pipes over the past few seasons, is expected to miss the entire season making way for Logan Thompson. The 25-year-old was 10-5-3 in 19 games in 2021-22, posting a 2.68 GAA and .914 save percentage. He was sharp in the preseason holding enemy shooters to six goals in nearly three full games worth of action, posting a .924 save percentage along the way.

Up front, Max Pacioretty is in Carolina now, but captain Mark Stone is healthy. The 30-year-old played in only 37 games last season due to injury, but is healthy and looking to replicate his 40-gal campaigns from 2019-20 and 2020-21.

The team added sniper Phil Kessel to a team-friendly deal in free agency, and he along with Stone and Jack Eichel, a longshot Hart Trophy odds contender, will be counted upon to shoulder the offensive load. Eichel had seven points in the preseason and will play alongside Kessel and Reilly Smith.

Los Angeles Kings Betting Analysis

Las Vegas missed the playoffs last season, while the Kings made it back to the postseason for the first time since 2018. LA’s big move this offseason was acquiring winger Kevin Fiala from Minnesota. Fiala potted 33 goals last season with 52 assists, and will form an impressive top-line with five-time All-Star Anze Kopitar, and 2022 All-Star Adrian Kempe.

The Kings are loaded on the backend with veterans, all of which are healthy after an injury-plagued 2021-22. The group is led by Drew Doughty, who played only 39 games last season, but don’t discount the significance of having Sean Walker and Matt Roy back at full strength as well.

The trio will help keep pucks away from 36-year-old Jonathan Quick, who’s back as LA’s number-one netminder. Quick posted a .910 save percentage and 2.59 GAA last season, his best numbers since the 2017-18 campaign. Similar to Thompson, Quick was also solid in preseason duties posting a 1.96 GAA and .930 save percentage.

Golden Knights vs Kings Pick

Both of these teams were above average in goals against last season, with LA ranking seventh despite a plethora of blueline injuries. Nothing from the offseason suggests the Kings will regress in that department, and in fact they should be even stronger than 2021-22 with their key defensemen finally healthy.

Golden Knights vs Kings Same-Game Parlay Picks

Pick Odds
Las Vegas Golden Knights Under 2.5 Goals +125
LA Kings 1st Goal -115
LA Kings Moneyline -120
PARLAY ODDS  +225

For that reason, I’m fading the Las Vegas offense for my official play, and for our same-game parlay. The teams split their regular season meetings last season, with the Golden Knights scoring two or fewer goals in both losses. LA held Vegas to only one goal in their preseason tilt, and I’m betting that Quick and Co. will keep them in check on Tuesday as well.

Pick: Las Vegas Golden Knights Under 2.5 Goals (+125)
