  • The Colorado Avalanche are -180 home favorites versus the Edmonton Oilers in Game 2 of the Western Conference final on Thursday, June 2
  • Colorado outscored Edmonton 8-6 to win Game 1
  • The Oilers vs Avalanche odds and picks are assessed in the story below

Both the Edmonton Oilers and Colorado Avalanche got into a DeLorean and took the Stanley Cup playoffs back to 1982 in the opening game of the Western Conference final.

The 14-goal outburst in Colorado’s 8-6 victory tied the mark for the second-most goals ever scored in the conference final game. Both starting goalies were chased and the game’s outcome wasn’t a certainly until the Avs netted an empty-net goal in the final minute of play. Twenty-five players saw their name etched on the scoresheet.

What to expect in Game 2? According to the NHL betting lines, more of the same. Colorado is a -180 home favorite to win again and claim a 2-0 edge in the best-of-seven series.

The puck is set to drop for Game 2 inside Ball Arena at 8:00 pm ET. Catch the action on TNT or Sportsnet in Canada. The total is set at 7 goals – low when compared to the Game 1 outcome but high for today’s NHL. The total has gone over in five of Edmonton’s last six games and four of Colorado’s last five games.

At a betting line of -180, the Avs are given an implied probability of victory of 64.29%. A $10 wager on Colorado would return a payout of $15.30.

In the NHL betting trends, the public is heavily backing Colorado. There’s 81% of the bets placed against the spread on the Avalanche  at-1. 5. The moneyline splits are showing 61% of the bets are on the Avalanche at -188. Not surprisingly, 88% of the public bets are on the Over (7).

In the Stanley Cup odds, the Avs are currently the +120 favorites. At NHL odds of +550, the Oilers are the second-longest shot on the board among the five teams still in the hunt for Lord Stanley’s mug.

Cale Makar, favored in the Norris Trophy odds, factored in three of Colorado’s franchise-record tying eight goals to register his fourth three-point outing on the playoffs. Only two defensemen in NHL history have notched more in a single postseason.

Oilers captain Connor McDavid, the second betting choice in the Hart Trophy odds, collected three points and  Leon Draisaitl counted a pair of assists. Draisaitl extended his multi-point streak to eight games and his assists streak to nine games.

Edmonton vs Colorado Injury Report

Colorado goalie Darcy Kuemper left Game 1 with an upper-body injury. He’s listed as questionable for Game 2. Defensemen Samuel Girard (broken sternum) and Ryan Murray (broken hand) are out for the Avalanche.

Forward Kyle Turris (upper body) is out for the Oilers.

Will It Be Smith vs Francouz?

Just as in Game 1 of the second round against Calgary, Oilers goalie Mike Smith was chased to the bench in the opener against Colorado by a barrage of goals. However, he came back to win four in a row after that debacle.

Even though Mikko Koskinen was the best goalie on the ice in Game 1, Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft has to come back with Smith. Smith is 2-0 in Game 2 of the playoffs this spring with a 1.50 goals-against average.

Oilers vs Avalanche Projected Starting Goalies

Team Goalie Record SV% GAA
Oilers Mike Smith 8-3 .917 3.12
Avalanche Pavel Francouz 3-0 .889 3.59

Avs goalie Kuemper left Game 1 with 12:41 to go into the second period with his upper-body issue. Pavel Francouz stepped in to make 18 saves.

Francouz is 3-0 in relief of Kuemper during the postseason. He was 2-0 in the opening-round against Nashville after Kuemper was sidelined with an eye injury.

Oilers vs Avalanche Game 2 Prediction

Over? Did someone say over? Yes, absolutely you should be betting the over on Game 2.

As for determining a winner, it could come down to which team gets the last shot on goal. Both of these teams are showing plenty of offense combined with an alarming lack of defense.

Game 2 has proven a struggle for the Avs. They lost 4-1 to St. Louis in Game 2 of the second round. In the opening round, Colorado worked overtime for a 3-2 verdict over Nashville.

The Oilers are 2-0 in Game 2 of their two playoff series and have outscored the opposition 11-3.
