Bayern Looking for Cup Number 20

For Bayern, this is familiar ground as the current trophy holders aim to qualify for their seventh DFB-Pokal final in the last nine seasons. They’ve won the trophy no less than 19 times in total and have been losing finalists on four occasions. Eintracht’s history in the competition has been less illustrious but they’ve still won it five times and have been beaten finalists three times. Worth noting is that two years ago, Frankfurt beat Bayern 3-1 in the final – something they’ll look to draw inspiration from ahead of this tie.

An interesting sub-plot to this is that winning the German Cup is Frankfurt’s only route for European qualification for next season. They currently sit in 11th place in the Bundesliga and have virtually no chance of making the top six, so a DFB-Pokal win is their only hope.

The Route to the Allianz

For Bayern, the route to the final hasn’t been quite as straightforward as you’d probably imagine – in part due to using fringe players in the earlier rounds – but wins over Energie Cottbus (3-1) and VfL Bochum (2-1) from the fourth tier and 2.Bundesliga respectively, set them up for a round-of-16 goal-fest with Hoffenheim, which they won 4-3. In their quarterfinal, they beat Schalke 1-0.

Eintracht began their campaign with a 5-3 win away at third-tier Waldhof Mannheim and followed it up with a 2-1 win away at 2.Bundesliga’s St. Pauli. Their big result came in the round-of-16 when they dispatched RB Leipzig 3-1, before clinching their place in the semi with a 2-0 win over Werder Bremen.

Lewandowski and Müller Back for Bayern

Bayern will likely play their big guns in this match though, especially considering Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller will both be suspended for their next league match after picking up an accumulation of yellow cards in their weekend win over Bayer Leverkusen. They will be without injured midfielder Corentin Tolisso though. Frankfurt have a few more problems, with influential Serb Filip Kostic still suspended after being sent off in the quarterfinal against Werder Bremen, and Gelson Fernandes and Gonçalo Paciência both missing out through injury.

In terms of head-to-heads, Bayern have unsurprisingly had the better of the exchanges since Frankfurt returned to the Bundesliga in 2016 – they’ve won eight of the last 11 games between the two – but Frankfurt did beat them 5-1 earlier this season and also, as mentioned earlier, 3-1 in the 2018 DFB-Pokal final. But their most recent meeting – the first game back after the two-month break – was a convincing 5-2 victory for Bayern.

Unstoppable Bayern

This remains a massive ask for Frankfurt, especially as it’s being played in Munich, and that’s even before we look at Bayern’s current form, which sees them unbeaten in all competitions in 2020. In the Bundesliga, they have won 15 of their last 16 league games and look to be coasting to yet another league title. Eintracht will look to their own recent form, which had been pretty good – unbeaten in three – until they lost 2-0 against Mainz at the weekend, but it’s still difficult to make a case for a win here for the visitors.

Bayern appears unstoppable right now and the two-month break has done nothing to disrupt their momentum. Add in the fact they have Lewandowski while Eintracht are without Kostic, and it starts to look like a case of not if, but by how many Bayern will win. Only a freak set of circumstances will see an Eintracht qualify for the final and while there’s no value in betting on a straight Bayern win, there is in predicting a correct score.
