Belgium Leads FIFA Rankings

Belgium’s route to the quarterfinal was relatively straightforward until they were handed the task of playing holders Portugal in Seville in the round of 16. It resulted in a titanic struggle between two of the tournament favorites and was settled in the end by a single goal from Thorgan Hazard, scored just before halftime.

As a result of their win over the Portuguese, the Belgians have now won 14 games on the spin and so are deserving of their number 1 world ranking by FIFA. Another telling stat, one the Italians will be wary of,  is that Belgium has scored at least once in each of their last 34 games, winning 23 of their last 27 in the process.

Martinez Looking for More Knockout Succes Over Mancini

Also worth noting though is that, historically, Italy has been a bogey team for Belgium and in their 22 meetings, the Belgians have won just four, while the Italians have been victorious 14 times. Belgium’s record in this competition is also a modest one, with their best performance being way back in 1980 when they made it to the final but lost 2-1 to West Germany.

An interesting sideshow to the main event is the tactical battle between two of the best managers in Europe, and while a lot of water has passed under the bridge since 2013 when the pair last clashed in a high-profile cup competition – the English FA Cup Final – it was was Roberto  Martinez’ minnows, Wigan Athletic, who triumphed against Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City.

High-Scoring Italians

The Italians have been outstanding so far in this tournament but were made to work really hard by Austria in their round of 16 game at Wembley. After a goalless 90 minutes, goals from substitutes Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina put the Italians 2-0 up before they suffered a late scare when the Austrians pulled one back. But it was a good, professional performance, and showed a different side to Mancini’s team who had easily blitzed the group stage in front of their home fans in Rome.

Only the Spanish, with 11 goals, have scored more than Italy, whose nine from four games so far is an impressive return, especially when coupled with some very Italian defending, played out by the most experienced defense in the competition. Austria’s late goal at Wembley ended an impressive run of 11 games without conceding, and we have to go back to September 2018 – vs Portugal – for their last defeat.

The last time Italy won this trophy was in 1968 when they were the host nation, but they have been runners-up twice since – in 2000 and 2012. Their route to the final this year is an enticing one, and if they can get past Belgium they play either Switzerland or Spain in the semifinals.

Belgium vs Italy Best Bet

As the number one ranked team in the world, it looks increasingly likely this could finally be Belgium’s time, especially as there have already been some big-name casualties, but Italy’s combination of experienced defense and youthful, fearless attack, will make it very tough.

Much will depend on the fitness of Kevin de Bruyne and Eden Hazard, both of whom limped off in Belgium’s win over Portugal, and if either or both are able to play a part against Italy, then the Belgians’ extra quality could tilt the balance in their favor. It is quite conceivable this could be another game that needs extra time to find a winner, but I predict Belgium will get the job done by the odd goal in normal time.

Pick: Belgium to win (+240) / Belgium to win 1-0 (+750)
