Flying Start for BVB

There is an extra edge to this one with Bayern Munich’s name now entering the fray in the race to sign BVB’s superstar Erling Haaland who, incidentally, played a part in all of Dortmund’s five goals in Saturday’s win over Frankfurt. This followed hot on the heels of the same player scoring all three goals in the DFB-Pokal win over Wehen Wiesbaden seven days earlier.

But it was at the weekend, on the opening Bundesliga weekend of the season when it really mattered, Haaland continuing that scoring run in devastating fashion with two goals in the Frankfurt game plus three assists for Giovanni Reyna, Thorgan Hazard, and Marco Reus.

Haaland Lining Up Against New Club?

The Haaland situation will make for a very interesting evening in Dortmund, especially with BVB having already reluctantly sold Jadon Sancho to Manchester United, but beyond this sideshow is the chance for Borussia to get their hands on some silverware in only the second week of the season.

With Bayern only drawing at the weekend and still in a state of flux after the late arrival back to training of some of their big names, BVB will fancy their chances here, especially if they can get off to a flying start.

A Bayern Win for Der Bomber?

The death of Bayern legend Gerd Muller at the weekend, aged 75, will add extra poignancy to this game. His record number of goals scored in the season had stood the test of time until Robert Lewandowski broke his long-standing Bundesliga goalscoring record of 40 goals last season. Der Bomber, as Muller was affectionately known, was a hero not just in Munich but in the whole of Germany because of his scoring exploits in the West German national team and will be fondly remembered on Tuesday in the Westfalenstadion.

Lewandowski meanwhile continues to hit the target with a regularity that only Muller would recognize and was on the scoresheet at the weekend. Unfortunately for him, his goal against Borussia Monchengladbach was only worth a point to Bayern who had to come from a goal behind before eventually eeking out a 1-1 draw.

Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann has had to contend with a tricky pre-season, largely due to most of his squad being involved in either this summer’s Euros or the Copa  America, and, unusually, the Bavarians failed to pick up a single win in their pre-season friendlies. For the Bayern coach, it is very much a case of waiting until the squad gets fully fit before he can expect the fireworks to begin, but they do have a superb Super Cup record to fall back on, winning four of the last five.

BVB vs Bayern Munich Best Bet

While games between these two usually produce plenty of goals, this one is harder to predict than most given its early-season nature. Both coaches may take the opportunity to give game time to those who, to date, have not had too many pre-season minutes in their legs and so predicting line-ups could be equally challenging.

But if Lewandowski and Haaland both get the nod it could end up being a battle of the big names – the one who gets on the scoresheet could win it for his team – but the momentum right now is definitely with BVB after their two wins so far. This one could go to extra-time and even penalties, so well matched are these two at this stage of the season, but for me, Dortmund can edge this one by the odd goal in normal time.

Pick: Borussia Dortmund to win (+195)
