Wobbly Braga

With six rounds left in the Primeira Liga, Sporting Lisbon lead the table by four points ahead of Porto, with Sunday’s hosts, Braga, currently fourth but still with a great chance of earning European soccer next season. So both teams come into this with plenty to lose.

Braga’s form has been wobbly of late but they did get back to winning ways last weekend with a 2-1 win over relegation-threatened Boavista in a match they totally dominated, with 72 percent of the possession and 25 shots on goal. In the end, goals from Fransérgio and Andraž Šporar were enough for the victory although they have to come from behind and their opponents played with ten men for the final 35 minutes. The scoreline was not as emphatic as it should have been.

While Braga’s season has generally been a good one, they have conceded too many goals to compete with Sporting and Porto at the top, and clean sheets have been hard to come by. Os Arcebispos have conceded in five of their last six games, conceding seven along the way, but in front of goal, their season has been a productive one.

Sporting Perfection

Sporting’s season has been almost perfect – they are yet to lose a league game – but they did drop a couple of points last weekend in a dramatic 2-2 draw with B-SAD. Despite enjoying 70 percent of possession and having 27 shots on goal, they were 2-0 down for a long spell and it took a Sebastián Coates goal in the 83rd minute and a Jovane Cabral penalty in the sixth minute of injury time to earn their draw. It was the closest they had been all season to losing their unbeaten record.

Despite leading the table for most of the season, Sporting has found going tough over the last few weeks – not helped by Porto heaping the pressure on with a run of seven consecutive wins – and is clearly feeling the pressure of a title run-in. The goal supply has slowed down too at the worst possible time and in their last six, they have scored just seven.

Sporting Undefeated on the Road

The last six head-to-heads between these two have produced three wins each, with every game being won by the home team, but this should now to be considered in the context of Sporting having been undefeated in their last 14 league games away from home. In their meeting earlier this season in Lisbon, it ended in a 2-0 win for Sporting, with the goals coming from Pedro Gonçalves and Matheus Nunes

Braga has a few long-term absentees ahead of this game and will be without Rui Fonte,  David Carmo, Iuri Medeiros, and Francisco Moura all still missing, and Sporar is unable to play against his parent club, but manager Carlos Carvalhal will be heartened by last weekend’s win and will demand more of the same. Sporting Lisbon boss Rúben Amorim has reported no new injury concerns ahead of the match.

Braga vs Sporting Best Bets

Given that Sporting is clearly feeling the pressure of a resurgent Porto, this one is a really tricky game for them – especially with Braga in with a good shout of a Europa place for next season – but Sporting’s unbeaten run is incredibly impressive and it does appear a little odd that Braga starts as favorites.

Therefore, with so much at stake and with now being the time to strike if they are going to go on and win another title, the value, for me, is with the Sporting win. They are top for a reason and have quality sprinkled throughout their team and have the league’s second-top goalscorer in their ranks.

Pick: Sporting to win (+180) / Goncalves first goalscorer (+500)
