It’s Matchday 22 in the Bundesliga and it’s unusually tight at the top of the table this season with just six points separating the top five. Traditionally, at this stage of the campaign, it’s usually developed into a two-horse race between Bayern Munich and BvB, but RB Leipzig’s year-on-year improvement has taken them into a title-challenging position.

They’re not alone though, with Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach also well in the hunt, so this promises to be the closest title chase in years, with unexpected results galore.

As a result, there’s plenty of betting value out there in this season’s Bundesliga, so we’ll have a look and see if we can find some for this weekend’s games.

Bundesliga Pick 1: Borussia Dortmund vs Eintracht Frankfurt

BvB were beaten 4-3 last weekend in a goal-fest in Leverkusen. They led 2-1 and then 3-2 but ultimately paid the price for some sloppy defending and left the BayArena empty-handed. It was their first league defeat of 2020 but, even with Bayern and Leipzig winning, they are still in third and very much in the hunt, just four points shy of the league-leaders.

Frankfurt comes into this game on a high after beating Augsburg 5-0 at the Commerzbank-Arena, with Timothy Chandler and Filip Kostic both scoring twice to maintain the Eagles unbeaten start to 2020. In fact, it was their third league victory in the New Year as their surge up the table for the European places continues. They currently sit ninth but a continuation of this fine run will take them into the cusp of Europa League qualification.

In order to get something from this game, Franfurt needs to improve their away form and, to be fair, there are signs of them doing so. They are up against a team though whose home stadium is a little short of a fortress. BvB score goals for fun in front of their fervent supporters, but there is something that makes the +390 for the draw very appealing. The Eagles are on a run and can get something here.

Pick: BvB and Eintracht to draw (+390)

Bundesliga Pick 2: FC Koln vs Bayern Munich

Bayern travel to Koln looking for their seventh win in their last eight games but this may not be the stroll most are predicting. Die Gieβbocke have themselves been in decent form in recent weeks, with four wins in their last five games.

Koln have successfully gone toe-to-toe with teams around them in the table this season but have struggled against title contenders – losing 4-0 to Bayern in the reverse fixture and getting hammered 5-1 by Borussia Dortmund – so this is a trend they need to buck. They also have to overcome a horrible record against Bayern, which is just two wins in 19 games, including 12 defeats.

Despite Koln’s good form, there is almost an acceptance of this being a comfortable home win, but let’s not ignore the fact that Bayern are in the midst of an injury crisis. If, and it remains a big if, Koln can manage the threat of the in-form Robert Lewandowski then the draw, at a juicy +580 is still in play.

Pick: Koln and  Bayern to draw (+580)

Bundesliga Pick 3: Mainz 05 vs Schalke 04

Mainz ended a four-game losing streak with an outstanding and fully deserved 3-1 away win to Hertha Berlin. The win pulled them four points clear of the relegation zone and re-instilled belief in the team that this is a battle they can win, but for that to happen they need to string wins together.

Schalke, who have spent most of the season in the top six and on the fringes of the top four, are now without a win in their last three, in which time they scored just once and conceded six. This is not the time to have a wobble and if they are serious about playing in European competition next season, they need a win and quickly.

The reverse fixture ended 2-1 to Schalke and will again be tight but home advantage and some good recent form may swing it for Mainz

Pick: Mainz 05 to win (+167)
