  • Defending champions Manchester City edge out Liverpool as strong -110 favorites to be top of the Premier League table on Christmas Day
  • With just one loss since May 2018, Liverpool sit as an attractive +150 wager to claim top of the table on Christmas Day for a second straight year
  • Newly promoted Sheffield United and Norwich City poised to engage in a two-way race for bottom of the table, with a tough home schedule giving the edge to the Canaries

Manchester City will be looking to carry over the strong play that capped their march to a second straight Premier League title last season, when they open their 2019/2020 schedule with a visit to West Ham United on Saturday August 10, 2019. And while they’re favored to win the Premier League outright, they’re also tipped to be leading the table at the midway point on Christmas Day.

Looking to the other end of the table, newcomers Sheffield United are the bookmaker’s choice to be bottom of the pack during the holiday season. We take a look at the best bet to be top and bottom in the EPL table on Christmas.

City Poised to Dominate in Early Going of Premier League Campaign

City closed out their run to last season’s championship with 14 straight victories, and are favored to continue their winning ways in the first half of the upcoming campaign, sporting short -110 odds to be sitting atop the EPL table on Christmas Day on the European soccer odds.

The Citizens are likely to benefit from a somewhat easy schedule during the first half of the season, despite concern from bench boss Pep Guardiola about the rigors of the club’s summertime schedule. The club faces opponents that finished among the top seven on last season’s table in just six of their first 18 contests, including home dates with Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea FC, and Manchester United.

In addition, the Citizens will have a golden opportunity to pad their point total in early-season clashes with Southampton, Brighton & Hove, and Burnley. As well as dates with newly promoted Norwich City and Aston Villa.

Liverpool FC, who led the way on the Premier League on Christmas Day of last year after opening the season on a sparkling 15-3-0 run, sit second to City as a +150 bet to duplicate that feat this time around.

The Reds continued their strong play in the second half of the campaign, but a 2-1 loss to City on January 3 dooming the club to a second-place finish. Liverpool now returns to action with favorable matchups of their own, opening their campaign with expected bottom-feeders Norwich City and Southampton.

However, the schedule gets steadily tougher for the Reds as Christmas approaches. They’re scheduled to take on Arsenal, Leicester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham before facing the Citizens in a highly anticipated clash at Anfield on November 9. The Reds are 3-1-0 in their past four league matches with City on home turf, and will likely to have extend that record of success if they are to keep pace with the Citizens ahead of Christmas Day.

The Reds are 3-1-0 in their past four league matches with City on home turf, and will likely to have extend that record of success if they are to keep pace with the Citizens ahead of Christmas Day.

Further down the odds to be top of the table on Christmas Day, the Blues join the Spurs at +1600, ahead of Manchester United at +1800, and Arsenal at +2500. With half of their first 18 contests coming against recently promoted squads or clubs that finished last season on the bottom half of the table, the Spurs sit as an intriguing vale wager to be top of table on Chrsitmas Day.

However, any chance the club has of paying out on healthy +1600 odds will likely hinge on early-season road dates in Manchester City on August 26, and at Anfield on October 26.

Pick: Manchester City (-110)

Blades, Canaries Set for a Two-Way Race to the Bottom

Sheffield United punched their ticket back to the Premier League for the first time since 2006/2007 with a solid campaign in EFL Championship play, finishing second to Norwich City on the league table with a 26-11-9 record. However, wins are likely to be exceedingly scarce in the early going of the EPL season, making the Blades strong +300 favorites to be buried at the bottom of the table on Christmas Day.

The Blades have taken steps to be competitive in their return to the top flight of English soccer. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson is set to join the club for another season on loan from Manchester United after keeping clean sheets in 21 of 46 appearances with Sheffield United last season. While recent signings Ravel Morrison and Phil Jagielka hope to revive their EPL careers with the Blades.

Sheffield will also enjoy a favorable August schedule, with matches against Bournemouth and Crystal Palace before reality sets in September, which features clashes with Leicester City, Chelsea, Everton, and Liverpool.

Norwich City sits second to the Blades as a +450 bet to be bottom of the table on Christmas Day in their first season of Premier League action since 2015/2016, while Burnley follows at +550.

The Canaries are returning to the EPL with largely the same core that won them the EFL Championship title last season, while the Clarets will be desperate to avoid the dismal start that left them just two points out of the league basement on Christmas Day last year.

With the Clarets likely to benefit from last year’s atrocious performance, it is likely to be a two-way race for the bottom of the table between Sheffield and Norwich, with the nod going to the Canaries, based on a rigorous early-season home schedule.

Pick: Norwich City (+450)
