Colombia vs Peru, the third-place play-off of the 2021 Copa America, takes place on Friday, July 9 at 8:00 pm EST in the Estádio Nacional de Brasília Mané Garrincha. Both teams lost narrowly in their semifinals; Peru losing out 1-0 to the host nation Brazil, while Columbia went even closer and took Argentina on a penalty shootout on Thursday night.

Peru Already With a 2-1 Win Over Colombia

Peru’s tournament got off to the worst possible start when they were hammered 4-0 by the hosts, Brazil, but they responded well to that early setback, with an impressive win over today’s opponents in their second game. A goal from Sergio Pena and an own goal from Yerry Mina was just enough to give them a thrilling 2-1 victory; one that set them up nicely for the rest of the tournament.

They found the going tough in their third game, however – drawing 2-2 draw with Ecuador – but returned to winning ways in their fourth, when Andre Carrillo scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Venezuela. The end result was second place in Group B, a group that was unsurprisingly topped by Brazil. For their quarterfinal tie, Los Incas were drawn against Paraguay, who finished third in Group A, and it ended up as a thriller in Goiania.

Beaten by Brazil by the Narrowest of Margins

The Paraguayans took an early 1-0 lead through Gustavo Gomez, but Peru responded well and roared into a 2-1 lead – goals from Gomez (own goal) and Lapadula – before Paraguay pulled one back on 80 munites to set up a nail-biting finale. They survived until the final minute when Paraguay’s Avalos squared things up. Peru held their nerve though and, with the shootout going to sudden death, Miguel Trauco scored the winning penalty.

Their reward was a semi against Brazil – a rerun of the 2019 Copa America final – but despite a brave effort, the quality of Brazil was just too much and they were edged out of a place in the final by the narrowest of margins. They exited with their heads held high though and so will go into this third-place playoff with plenty of belief and confidence.

Colombia Disappointing but Still Capable of Big Performances

Colombia’s tournament had been a generally disappointing one – especially as they were highly fancied coming into it – but, despite being unfancied in their semifinal with Argentina, they took Messi and co all the way and only lost out in a place in the final after losing a penalty shoot-out.

Prior to the semi, they had only won a single game in the tournament but found their best form at the best possible time and in doing so gave the Argentinians a proper scare. They still, however, head into the third-place playoff with just a single win under their belts in the whole tournament, which came way back on June 13 when they opened their Group B fixtures with a victory over Ecuador – Edwin Cardona scoring the only goal of the game.

There were signs of things to come in their next game against the group’s minnows, Venezuela, when they could only manage a goalless draw, and their major issue – a chronic lack of creativity – was to hinder them again in game three when they fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat against tonight’s opponents. Game four was an improvement, a narrow 2-1 defeat by the hosts, Brazil, and worth noting is, together with the Argentina performance, their two best displays came when the stakes were at their highest.

Third place in the group handed them a tricky-looking quarterfinal against Uruguay but while they defended well, they again found it hard to create chances, and so it took them to hold their nerve in a penalty shoot, which they won 4-2, to earn their semifinal place against Argentina. Whether that sound defense will be enough to see them past Peru remains to be seen.

Colombia vs Peru Best Bets

While Colombia starts this as favorites and Peru are generally regarded as one of the minnows of South American soccer, there is a compelling case, based on form, for a win here for the underdogs. Peru has played the better soccer of the two, has attacked with more intent, and is generally more expansive in their play.

On that basis, despite Peru having conceded more goals, the value here is definitely with the Peruvian win, especially at a juicy +350.
