England’s Home Comforts
Since 1966, Germany has eliminated England in tournament knockout games in 1970, 1990, 1996, 2010, stopped them from qualifying for 1972 Euros, and knocked them out of the 1982 World Cup at the second group stage. England’s only tournament win against the Germans came in the 2000 Euros, although both went out at the group stage of that tournament. These two have history!

What awaits them both on Tuesday will be a rocking, half-full Wembley Stadium; a stadium that will be hoping England’s so-far rock-solid defense can keep at bay a thriving German attack that has seen them through to the round-of-16 by scoring six times. Italy was the only other team to go through to the last-16 without conceding a goal, but England will need to find a way to be more productive at the other end of the pitch if they are to progress. This will be England’s fourth consecutive home game in this tournament – a significant advantage.
Two goals from Raheem Sterling earned England their place at the top of Group D – the only goal in a 1-0 win over Croatia in their opener and a header to win their final group game against the Czech Republic – while their second goal was a tight, edgy 0-0 draw with Scotland. So, while England has not hit any great heights, seven points out of a possible nine was a good, solid return and have set them up nicely.
Southgate’s Attacking Conundrum
Gareth Southgate has modeled an exciting young team but it’s his team’s defense that has excelled over the last few months and they have, in fact, played over 450 minutes of football since last conceding a goal. As a result, they head into this clash off the back of a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions.

Southgate’s conundrum, of course, is how to retain this defensive solidity while getting his team to offer more of a threat in the attacking third, and he will have to decide if playing a three-man defense – something he has toyed with in the past – offers better attacking options than his preferred 4-2-3-1. Either way, they must find a way to trouble a German defense that has creaked at times if they are to book a place in the last eight to face either Sweden or Ukraine.

A Final Glorious Hurrah for Low?
Joachim Low’s men were thankful for a late Leon Goretska equalizer against Hungary to earn their place in the knockout phase. For long spells, it looked as if the Germans could miss out altogether and Low’s reign in charge would end in heartbreak but, as has so often been the case in his tenure, they somehow found a way.

In their opening game against France, the Germans lost 1-0 while being thoroughly outplayed, but they did bounce back well in their second game when producing their best soccer of the tournament to beat Portugal 4-2. The draw with Hungary was not a great performance from a technical perspective but they did show desire and hunger when it was most needed.
For Southgate, this is a chance for redemption after, 25 years ago, missing the penalty that resulted in England losing to Germany in the semifinal of the 1996 Euros – something he has had to live with whenever these two sides meet or when penalty shoot-outs come into the equation.

England vs Germany Best Bet
For England to win, they really need captain and striker Harry Kane to rediscover his scoring touch, and this German defense, unlike those of the recent past, does have its shaky moments. But, equally, Germany’s vibrant attack will test this England defense more than Croatia or the Czech Republic did.
There will be little to chose between these two and it could be one of those games decided by a piece of brilliance or a mistake. So, for me, I can see it going to extra-time and perhaps even penalties again. On that basis, for me, there is value in the draw after 90 minutes.
Pick: England and Germany to draw (+225)
