After a flying start to the season, Carlo Ancelotti’s Toffees suffered an autumn blip but have now rediscovered their early-season mojo and are unbeaten in six of their last seven games. They are also unbeaten in their last two and come into this game off the back of an outstanding 3-3 draw away at Manchester United at the weekend; outstanding because they were 2-0 down at half-time and looked certain to lose. In the end, a Dominic Calvert-Lewin strike in the dying seconds earned them the unlikeliest of points.

Spurs Having a Wobble

Tottenham’s form has been on the decline, although they did stop the rot at the weekend with a 2-0 home win over struggling West Brom, but three losses in their last seven matches in all competitions were not part of the Jose Mourinho plan. Those three defeats came in consecutive games – against Liverpool, Brighton, and Chelsea – and even more troubling at the time for Mourinho was the absence of top scorer Harry Kane who suffered damage to both ankles in the defeat by Liverpool. Luckily he was back at the weekend and scored in the win over West Brom.

Spurs will be hoping Kane’s return to fitness will help take them a step closer to Wembley but will also know this will be an infinitely more difficult test than those they have encountered so far in this competition, with wins over non-league Marine and Wycombe Wanderers from the Championship yielding a cumulative return one nine goals scored one conceded. Everton will offer a much bigger threat.

Ancelotti Aiming for Silverware

The Toffees’ journey to the fifth round has been a little more tricky than Spurs’, and they needed extra-time to finally see off the threat of Rotherham in the third round before making rather easier work of Sheffield Wednesday in the fourth round, who they beat 3-0.

Ancelotti will see this as a great chance to progress, especially with a home tie at Goodison Park, and while they have dropped out of the title race he will want this to be a memorable season for his men who have shown a huge improvement over the course of the last year.

When these two teams met on the opening day of the season at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, it was Everton who triumphed when a second-half header from Calvert-Lewin was enough for a 1-0 win. Ancelotti will have noted what worked and what did not work for Everton that day and will use it as part of his game plan on Wednesday.

A Fit Kane But a Struggling Bale

While Spurs will be without Giovani Lo Celso, Sergio Reguilon and Dele Alli, the fact that Kane’s ankle problems now look to be behind him is a massive boost, although the form of Gareth Bale remains a concern. For Everton, Ancelotti is likely to be without goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who missed the Manchester United game at the weekend with a chest injury, with Robin Olsen again expected to deputize, and there are also question marks over defensive midfielder Allan (thigh strain) and James Rodriguez (calf problem).

So, while the return of Kane will give Spurs a far greater chance of winning this game, Everton is a team in form and the point at Old Trafford will have sent their confidence levels sky-high. Tottenham currently only appears capable of beating teams they are expected to beat and so, for that reason, I expect Everton to edge this one by the odd goal.
