Genk Off to Flyer Followed by Two Defeats

Genk’s Europa League started in the best way possible with an excellent 2-1 away win over Rapid Wien 1-0 but, unfortunately for them, what has happened since has been disappointing. Two 3-0 defeats, away to West Ham and then at home to Dinamo Zagreb, have seen them slump to the bottom of Group H, although only on goal difference. The two teams above them – Dinamo and Rapid – also have just three points.

With three games still to go, it is therefore all to play for and coach John van den Brom will be desperate for his men to get something from this game to prevent them losing ground to Dinamo and Rapid. It will be a difficult evening for them though, given the emphatic defeat they suffered at the London Stadium, where goals from Craig Dawson, Issa Diop and Jarrod Bowen gave the Hammers an easy win.

Three Wins on the Bounce for Genk

This Genk team is now in good form though and since the West Ham game has won three out of three, playing an attacking brand of soccer and scoring no less than 15 goals in the process.  They, therefore, approach this game bursting full of confidence.

With Dinamo Zagreb and Rapid Wien playing each other, a win over West Ham could potentially leave them in pole position to grab the second qualifying spot that would earn them qualification for the knockout phase of the tournament. The stakes are high and a feisty Genk crowd will be driving their team forward in search of the win.

The Flying Hammers

West Ham is also in excellent form and, like Genk, have won all of the games they have played since the 3-0 win at the London Stadium. On Sunday they were 4-1 victors away at Aston Villa – a result that took them up to fourth in the Premier League table. Prior to that, they beat Tottenham 1-0 at home in a London derby and then knocked Manchester City, the current holders of the Carabao Cup, out of that competition.

Manager David Moyes has managed to build on a very successful 2020-21 and has made the Hammers look an even more rounded and potent unit this season; one capable of challenging on both domestic and European fronts.

Only Two Defeats So Far for West Ham

Among the many qualities of Moyes’ current West Ham team is its ability to get goals from across the board, with four different players getting on the scoresheet against Villa. Defensively they have been very sound too and have lost just twice so far this season in all competitions, so they head to Genk full of belief and expecting to go one step closer to ensuring qualification to the knockout phase. A win here could be enough.

The Hammers have yet to concede a goal in the Europa League this season but have scored seven in their three games and so arrive in Belgium in a good place.

Genk vs West Ham Prediction

Genk’s home advantage will count for something here though and a noisy boisterous crowd in the Cegeka Arena will ensure this is no easy ride for the Londoners. The stats point to an away win but with some good recent form behind them, Genk will be competitive, especially with the stakes so high.

I am tempted by the home win at +265 because West Ham are not the world’s best travelers, but with the draw on offer at the same price that, for me, is where the value lies.

Pick: Genk and West Ham to draw (+265)
