Getafe looked assured of a European place. That has quickly changed with a badly timed patch of poor form, which has seen them take just two of the last 12 available. Crumbling Getafe

Winless in four and with only one win in their last 10 La Liga outings, Getafe have hit a rotten spell. Failing to beat relegation-threatened Deportivo Alaves last time out highlighted their struggles – it was a match with very few chances created by either side.

Getafe are a team built on a solid defense. Only Valencia and the two Madrid teams have conceded fewer this season. While the attack was doing enough earlier in the year to pick up victories, that has changed of late.

Since the season resumed, Getafe have only scored two goals in a match on one occasion. They have failed to score in four matches.

Their chance creation – 6.75 non-penalty expected goals in nine matches since the restart – is among the worst in the league. Espanyol and Alaves are the only two teams in La Liga to have scored fewer over that period.

Atletico are not an ideal opponent for a team that has struggled going forward.

The title race is long gone for Simeone’s side, but with the Champions League coming back next month, they are getting some good preparation in with competitive La Liga matches. Unbeaten in 16 in all competitions, Atletico have won six of nine since the restart.

Away form is what makes this a trickier match to call. Despite this good run, the Madrid-based team have won just three of their 12 in all competitions on the road. They were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Celta Vigo in their last match away from Wanda Metropolitano.

The return to some sort of goalscoring form for Diego Costa has been handy. The former Chelsea striker netted the winners over Alaves in late June and Real Betis a few days ago.

These are the two lowest-scoring teams in La Liga’s top six. There have been under 2.5 goals in the last 11 meetings between Getafe and Atletico, and a similarly cagey affair is to be expected at Coliseum Alfonso Pérez on Thursday.

Getafe are low on confidence. Atletico have been draw specialists away from home this season, sharing the spoils in 10 of their 18 away matches.

A draw isn’t ideal for the hosts, but given their results of late, it might be the best they can hope for against an Atletico team that, even in a disappointing season, remains incredibly hard to beat.
