The 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup kicked off this weekend and continues Monday with Group C with Jamaica vs Suriname and Costa Rica vs Guadeloupe, both in Orlando’s  Exploria Stadium.

No Wins in Three for Jamaica

Jamaica and Suriname meet at Exploria Stadium in Orlando on Monday, July 12 at 6:30 pm EST in the opening game of the Gold Cup’s Group C. While the Jamaicans understandably start as hot favorites, it is worth noting that they have played just three times in this calendar year, have yet to win and have also failed to record a clean sheet across in their last five games.

This is the Reggae Boyz’ 12th appearance in the Gold Cup since it replaced the CONCACAF Cup back in 1991, so they are experienced campaigners at this level. In their most recent appearance, in 2019, they finished fourth, but in their two previous appearances, in 2015 and 2017, they were losing finalists – losing to Mexico and the USA respectively. Their squad contains some familiar names including Andre Blake (Philadelphia Union), Kemar Lawrence (Toronto FC), and Oniel Fisher (LA Galaxy) from the MLS.

Decent Form for Suriname

Suriname is a big underdog for this game but in the form table, despite suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat by Canada in a World Cup qualifier in June, they fare better than tonight’s opponents. Prior to the Canada defeat, they had been on a run of five straight wins, four of which came with clean sheets, so they will make like tougher for Jamaica than the odds suggest.

This will, however, be their first-ever appearance in a CONCACAF tournament since 1985, and so it will be a squad lacking experience at this level, which may be a telling factor. To qualify for the tournament is an achievement in itself and they did so via the CONCACAF Nations League, where their promotion from Group B to Group A saw them qualify automatically.

The two have met on just four occasions in their histories, with Jamaica winning all four, but another fact well worth noting is that each win was only by a single-goal margin. Their most recent meeting, in 2018, ended in a 2-1 Jamaican win and while there is little value betting on the straight win, there is on betting on a repeat scoreline. Suriname will play with pride and passion but may come up just short in their Gold Cup debut.

Costa Rica Among the Favorites

Costa Rica and Guadeloupe meet at Exploria Stadium in Orlando on Monday, July 12 at 9:00 pm EST in the second game of Group C. Costa Rica are considered the quality team of the group and, along with Jamaica, is expected to qualify for the knockout phase. While they have won the old CONCACAF Cup three times, they are yet to win their first Gold Cup title but have a chance to go all the way here.

Their best Gold Cup finish was in 2002 when they lost 2-0 to the USA in the final but they have also made it to the semifinal twice, most recently in 2017. Like Jamaica, they have some big names, such as Bryan Ruiz and Johan Venegas, while also having some MLS stars, which include Ronald Matarrita (FC Cincinnati), Allan Cruz (FC Cincinnati), Francisco Calvo (Chicago Fire), and Ariel Lassiter (Houston Dynamo).

 

Guadeloupe Has Been Here Before

Guadeloupe hasn’t qualified for the Gold Cup since 2011 and is considered the minnow of this tournament, but should not be dismissed as they have experienced these finals before. They qualified with a nerve-jangling 10-9 penalty shootout win against Guatemala – a fine effort on their part – but it is worth remembering that they have been as far as the semis in this competition. This came back in 2007 – their first-ever Gold Cup appearance – and they followed it up with appearances in 2009 and 2011.

It is difficult to make a case for anything other than a Costa Rica win, given the gulf in quality and recent experience of this tournament, but Guadeloupe will be determined to not be along just for the ride. They will battle hard and so while a Costa Rica win looks almost nailed on, for me, it will not be by the big margin many are predicting.
