Pick 1: Toluca vs Necaxa
These two are in 10th and 11th, respectively, with just two points separating them. The goal for Toluca and Necaxa would be to finish as high as possible because only the top 12 sides qualify for the playoffs.
Last time out, Toluca beat Tijuana 2-0 thanks to early goals from Rubens Sambueza and Jonatan Maidana in the first 20 minutes. The hosts played solid throughout, keeping their opponents scoreless while grabbing a crucial three points. However, Carlos Adrian Morales’ side has won just twice in their last five outings. With their Matchday 16 counterparts right on their heels, it will be vital that Toluca find a result on the road here.
Necaxa is in 11th with 18 points, with Juarez just three points off them in the final playoff spot. But the higher Necaxa can finish, the better seeding they will have for the Repechage matches, which is the first round of the playoffs before the knockout stages. Jose Cruz’s men enter this round 16 fixture in fine form, having won their last three games while conceding no goals.
Given Necaxa’s dominance lately, I like them here. Although their form at home has been dismal this term, I believe they’re going to pull out a two-goal victory on Friday.
Pick: Necaxa +120
Pick 2: Monterrey vs Cruz Azul
Just three points separate sixth-place Monterrey and second-place Cruz Azul, who clash this Saturday.
The hosts will enter this meeting with boatloads of confidence, dropping points just once in their last five matches. Their only defeat during that span was against Tigres on Matchday 12 as they head into this crucial fixture fresh off three straight victories. Argentine striker Rogelio Funes Mori leads Monterrey with five goals and will be looking to add to his total this weekend.
Cruz Azul is in second spot, but they might not be for long if they don’t improve in their remaining two matches. Azul is 2-1-2 in their last five appearances and desperately need a result against Monterrey. On a positive note though, they do enter this match in good spirits after burying Guadalajara 2-0 last Sunday.
Monterrey has lost just once at home this season and looks hungry to secure their berth in the top four. But, I believe Cruz Azul will play a hard-fought match, resulting in a draw on the road.
Pick: Draw +235
Pick 3: Club America vs Tigres UANL
This fixture could be the most meaningful of the weekend, with the hosts looking to stay in the top four and avoid the first round of the playoffs, meanwhile, fifth-place Tigres will look to secure a victory and leapfrog Club America, who are in fourth and just one point ahead of them.
Tigres couldn’t enter this weekend’s clash in better form. They haven’t lost since Matchday 8, tying just two matches since and winning the other five. Andre-Pierre Gignac has been lethal in the final third, bagging ten goals for Tigres. The Frenchman is a key part of their attack and will surely be at the forefront against America.
Club America are 2-2-1 in their last five outings but still sit in fourth place. They’ve scored more goals than any other side in Liga MX, with Henry Martin and Federico Vinas scoring almost half of their tallies. On Matchday 15, they barely scraped out three points, scoring a winner in the dying minutes of the second half against Atlas.
It’s hard to ignore Tigres’ form over the last two months. They’re eager to surge into the top four and have shown they have the ability to do so. I like the visitors in this clash. America is solid at home, but Tigres also plays well on the road, losing just once. I believe they’re going to secure a one-goal victory on Sunday.
Pick: Tigres +135
