Four teams are now tied at the top of the Liga MX Guardianes table on seven points after Club America lost their 100 percent record at the weekend. This is the first section of Mexico’s two-stage league competition for 2020-21 and has been renamed as the “Guardianes” in honor of the efforts of the nation’s health workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We’ll list all nine games for Round 4, show the odds, preview three, and offer a pick for each.

All odds taken Aug 11

Pick 1: Tigres UANL vs Puebla

Puebla begins the day as part of a four-way tie at the top of the Liga MX, although are technically second, behind Club América, on goal difference. They travel to the Estadio Universitario on Wednesday to play fifth-placed Tigres, who themselves are only two points off the pace.

Tigres come into this off the back of a goalless draw away to Club Tijuana but are unbeaten so far this season and have, to date, conceded just a single goal, while Puebla had their second victory of the season at the weekend, winning 1-0 away in Guadalajara.

Games between these two are notoriously tight and in their last six meetings, there have been two wins each and two draws, with their most recent league meeting – back in March – ending goalless.

Worth noting also is that Tigres are on a long unbeaten run, with their last competitive defeat being back in February, as well as being unbeaten in their last 10 home league games. So, while Puebla are flying, an away win is still a big ask, but let’s not rule out a draw with the high-flying. For me, that’s where the value lies.

Pick: UANL and Puebla to draw (+310)

Pick 2: Pumas UNAM vs Monterrey

It’s joint-top versus seventh in the Estadio Olímpico Universitario on Thursday, as the unbeaten Pumas entertain Monterrey, who have a full house – a win, a draw, and a defeat – on the board so far. For UNAM it’s been a flying start to the campaign, with wins over Querétaro (3-2) and Atlas (2-1) being followed, most recently, with a 1-1 draw against FC Juárez. It’s a continuation of their form in the canceled Clausura 2020, where they scored plenty of goals but also conceded similar numbers. There’ll be goals in this one.

For Monterrey, the Clausura 2020 was a huge disappointment and when the league was officially canceled on May 22 they were bottom. Having a win and a draw already under their belt in the early stages of this season will be seen as a considerable step forward, the victory coming in their season opener against Toluca (3-1). Last weekend they earned a creditable point in a 2-2 draw with Santos Laguna.

With UNAM in decent plus-money, the value is definitely with the home win.

Pick: UNAM to win (+240)

Pick 3: Club América vs Santos Laguna

Club América still head the table but now only on goal difference after a 1-1 draw with Necaxa last weekend. They’ll be hoping to use this game against midtable opposition, as an opportunity to further strengthen their grip on the top spot. When the Clausura 2020 was canceled América was fourth, so they’ll be hoping to improve on that this time around, and they have the squad to do just that.

Last time out, Santos Laguna drew 2-2 with Monterrey to give themselves a full house of a win, draw and a loss, but have an ordinary record away from home, losing their last three league games on the road. They are not prolific goalscorers, even though they were third when last season was canceled – scoring just 14 goals in their 10 games – and so this will be a tough game for them.

The last league match between the two – Matchday 17 on March 11, 2019 – was a 2-1 away win for Santos, but much has changed since then, and even though they’re odds-on, a Club América win is the value bet here.

Pick: América to win (-115)
