Liverpool vs Manchester City Prediction

After losing away to leaders Arsenal last Sunday. this looked to be the worst possible fixture for Liverpool as they looked to get their EPL campaign back on track, but something extraordinary happened on Wednesday night when the Reds traveled to Glasgow to play Rangers in the Champions League.

Not only did Jurgen Klopp’s men come away with the three points, but they also came away with an incredible 7-1 scoreline – one that all but secured their place in the knockout phase of the UCL. But it was more than that. Lots of questions were asked of Liverpool after the defeat on Sunday – among them, ‘is this Liverpool team now too old and lacking in hunger?’

Hat-Trick Salah

The win in Glasgow answered that question and more – emphatically so – and the six-minute hat-trick from Mo Salah also put to bed any doubts over the Egyptian’s hunger and desire. After having to come back from a goal down, it was literally the perfect response to the setback in North London.

Klopp’s men may be down in 10th in the EPL, but Pep Guardiola said in Friday’s presser that  City still regard them as their main rivals. A very noisy and boisterous Anfield awaits Pep’s men on Sunday and this will be City’s toughest game of the campaign so far.

City’s Haaland on Fire

City’s season goes from strength to strength and with Erling Haaland – their summer signing from Borussia Dortmund – on fire, they look capable of not just beating, but thrashing every opponent put before them.

It didn’t happen in midweek though when their trip to play FC Copenhagen in the Champions League ended 0-0 although, in truth, all the hard work had already been done and the Citizens’ place in the knockout phase of the competition is already assured.

Arsenal in City’s Sights

Prior to the draw in Denmark, City had won five games on the spin and in the process had scored no less than 20 goals. Haaland, on his own, has already scored 15 goals in the nine EPL appearances, so it’s fair to say the result in Copenhagen was the smallest of blips rather than a sign of what’s to come.

With Arsenal still one point ahead of City in the EPL table, there is still work for them to do before they can take control of the league as they have done for the last two seasons, but there is no team better equipped to deal with the maelstrom of a noisy, bouncing Anfield.

Liverpool vs Manchester City Team Lineups and Injuries

Liverpool Projected Lineup: Alisson, Gomez, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago, Salah, Nunez, Firmino.

Injuries & absences: Stones, Phillips, Walker.

Liverpool vs Manchester City Pick

Liverpool’s week began badly but the win in Glasgow will have given them a much-needed and timely boost.

Although City will provide them with their toughest test of the season so far, the opposite is also true – as Guardiola confirmed in his Friday press conference – and the cauldron of noise in Anfield will make for a tough afternoon for the visitors.

This will be tighter than the odds suggest and there looks to be value in the draw at +295.

Pick: Liverpool and Man City to draw (+295)
