Manchester City will hope to bounce back from the unfamiliar feeling of defeat when they face Southampton in England’s Premier League on Wednesday. This Man City vs Southampton tilt will kick off at 1:00 pm EST Wednesday afternoon.

The league leaders’ extraordinary streak of 21 successive wins in all competitions came to an end when they were beaten 2-0 at home by rivals Manchester United last Sunday.

By contrast, Southampton breathed a sigh of relief on Saturday after their 2-0 victory against bottom club Sheffield United ended a run of eight defeats and one draw.

Matchup Spread Moneyline Total
Manchester City vs Southampton MAN -2.5 (+155) | SOU +2.5 (-190) MAN -500| SOU +1300 | DRAW +600 Un 2.5 (+163) | Ov 2.5 (-205)

Odds taken from DraftKings on March 9.

Those sudden shifts in fortune have not cut much ice with the oddsmakers at Draftkings.

Consequently, they make City massive -500 favorites for a win – with Southampton at +1300 and even the draw a very wide price at +600.

Even the spread offers are unpromising in the main here with the best value looking like the +155 quoted for City to win by three or more goals (Asian Handicap -2.5). Alternatively, the draw may be worth a fling at that wide price.

Pep Guardiola’s City leads the EPL by a healthy 11 points from second-placed Manchester United.

Four Trophies in Sight for City

Given that, the title looks more or less wrapped up as the team chases an unprecedented “Quad” target of four trophies.

Plainly, they are re-establishing their dominant position in the English game.

In the last 16 of the Champions League, they hold a 2-0 leg one lead over Germany’s Borussia Monchengladbach.

Furthermore, they face Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the EFL Carabao Cup at Wembley on April 25.

And they travel to meet Everton in the last eight of the FA Cup on March 20.

With veteran forward Sergio Aguero absent for much of the season, coach Guardiola has often employed a “false nine” tactical set-up without a recognized striker.

Ilkay Gundogan is City’s top marksman with 11 strikes in all competitions followed by Raheem Sterling who has nine.

It has not affected their goal-getting prowess as they are the leading scorers in the EPL with a tally of 56 to their credit.

Goal-scoring duties have therefore been shared around the squad.

For example, Ilkay Gundogan is City’s top marksman with 11 strikes in all competitions followed by Raheem Sterling who has nine.

Then, Riyad Mahrez has seven with both Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus having netted six times each.

All winning runs must come to an end sometime and City looked tired in the defeat by United.

In particular, influential midfielder Kevin De Bruyne was sluggish by his usual exemplary standards.

Even so, City had won the previous 15 EPL matches to build what looks like an unassailable lead at the top of the table.

Goals from United’s Bruno Fernandes – a second-minute penalty – and Luke Shaw breached the competition’s best defense last weekend.

Stones and Dias Solid in Defense

With center-backs John Stones and Ruben Dias forming a particularly strong partnership, City has conceded only 19 league goals this season.

Indeed, they have kept an impressive 15 clean sheets in league games.

Southampton are in 14th place and may head to City’s Etihad Stadium with some trepidation given the outcome of their last visit to Manchester.

Humiliatingly, they were thrashed 9-0 at Manchester United on February 2.

That came during a dismal run that wiped out the optimism of earlier in the season.

After a 1-0 defeat of champions Liverpool at home on January 4, Ralph Hassenhutl’s Southampton team were in sixth place.

But then came a run of six straight defeats.

Southampton’s win at Sheffield United finally brought a welcome three points.

Although a 1-1 draw with Chelsea on February 20 halted that sequence, they subsequently lost 3-0 at Leeds United and 1-0 at Everton.

However, Southampton’s win at Sheffield United finally brought a welcome three points.

Even so, the trip to City is Southampton’s fourth successive away game – and the toughest of all of them.

There was a 1-0 win for City when they visited Southampton’s St. Mary’s Stadium on December 19. Raheem Sterling scored the goal.

Only One Win in 10

Last season’s 1-0 win at home for Southampton was their only win against City in the last 10 meetings.

Overall, Southampton have conceded 44 league goals this season while scoring only 33 times.

On the road, they have won four games, drawn four and lost on six occasions.

In particular, they have conceded 28 goals in away matches while scoring only 16 times.

By contrast, City have scored 33 times at home while conceding only 11 times.

This has helped build a record of 11 wins, two draws and only two defeats on their own patch.

Pick: Manchester City – Asian Handicap -2.5 (+155)
