Coutinho Back to England?

The noises coming out of Barcelona and the Philippe Coutinho camp suggest that the little Brazilian could leave the Catalan giants this summer, with a host of Europe’s top clubs ready and awaiting developments.

For reasons that are not clear, it simply hasn’t happened for the Brazil international in Barcelona. The sparks that were expected when he arrived from Liverpool in January 2018 in a £142million deal simply haven’t materialised.

It may be that Coutinho has been inhibited by the giant presence of Lionel Messi. He wouldn’t be the first to get engulfed by the shadow of a superstar – or indeed it could the fact he was unable to make the impact of Luiz Suarez, who followed the same Liverpool to Barcelona path.

An Unhappy Camp Nou

But, whatever the reason, things have turned a little ugly in the Camp Nou over the last few months with sections of the crowd expressing their displeasure at Coutinho’s lack of productivity for a player who costs such a huge sum.

In particular, he was anonymous in the recent two-legged UEFA Champions League semifinal with his old club Liverpool, something that was not lost on the Catalan fans.

As a result, the Spanish papers are full of talk of the Brazilian moving back to the English Premier League – a league in which he excelled – with Manchester United and Chelsea both said to be monitoring the situation. In one paper, Mundo Deportivo, the 26-year-old is reported to have said that he would prefer to join Chelsea, rather than United.

No Champions League for United

A deciding factor here could be that the Red Devils’ sixth-place finish in the EPL meant they missed out on Champions League soccer next season, whereas Chelsea’s third place meant they will be competing amongst Europe’s elite.

The big stumbling block for the Blues, however, is that they have a two-window transfer ban. This, at the moment is the subject of an appeal, and so if their appeal is rejected they will not be bringing any new faces in.

It simply hasn’t happened for the Brazil international in Barcelona. The sparks that were expected when he arrived from Liverpool simply haven’t materialised.

In Chelsea’s favor though is the financial might of owner Roman Abramovich. They will be doing everything they can to at least get the ban put on hold so they can be active in this summer’s window, not least because it looks almost certain that they will lose Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.

Our pick: Coutinho to Chelsea (+1800)
