Honduras Rediscovering Scoring Touch

Honduras kicked off their group stage schedule with a welcome return to offensive form, marching to a 4-0 victory over Grenada. But while the Catrachos managed to fill the net, they also needed to contain a feisty Grenada offense that recorded 11 total shots in the contest.

The victory extends the Hondurans’ current unbeaten streak to three matches across all competitions, and marks a turnaround after the club mustered just six total goals over their previous seven outings.

Recent Form Deceiving

While the club’s recent middling form factored into the lengthy +3300 opening odds they sported to claim their first Gold Cup title in 40 years, they have been steady in recent non-friendly competition.

Honduras is coming off a solid performance in CONCACAF Nations League play, racking up a 4-1-1 win-draw-loss record, with their only defeat coming in their semi-final matchup against the United States, a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in early June.

Los Catrachos also enjoy a lengthy track record of success against Panama, capped by clean sheet victories in two of their past three meetings.

However, things have tightened up considerable these two clubs have met at the Gold Cup, with each side earning one win over their past three dates, and settling for a 1-1 draw in their most recent tournament clash six years ago.

Panama Desperate for Points

While Honduras aim to advance out of the group stage at the Gold Cup for just the second time in four tournament appearances, Panama will be desperate for points as they hit the pitch as +250 underdogs.

Los Canaleros entertained in their tournament opener against Qatar, but were forced to settle for a 3-3 draw in a wide-open Matchday 1 clash. Panama never led in that contest, but showed resilience while quickly overcoming three one-goal deficits in the contest, and being outshot by a wide 15-11 margin.

Despite their efforts against Qatar, the draw leaves Panama riding a three-match winless streak across all competitions. The club saw a recent successful run in World Cup qualifying end in mid-June on a disappointing note, with a 0-0 draw with Curacao.

Canaleros Thrive at Gold Cup

The Canaleros subsequently came out flat in a late-June friendly with Mexico, losing by a decisive 3-0 margin. But while the Canaleros have now surrendered six total goals over their past two outings, they have otherwise shut down opposing shooters, allowing just two total goals over their previous seven outings overall.

Panama has also produced consistent results at the Gold Cup, advancing out of the group stage in each of their past eight appearances, including a pair of trips to the final.

The club has also suffered just one loss in 18 group stage matches at this tournament since 2009. Considering the long history between these clubs, and their recent ability to contain opponents, look for Saturday’s class to be a low-scoring affair with nothing decided in 90 minutes.

The Picks: Draw +235; UNDER 2.5 (-165)
