It will be a different Coupe de France final to other years. Everything is unusual in 2020, though PSG’s place in the final is about as normal as it gets in French football. They will take on St. Etienne at Stade de France on July 24th.

There hasn’t been a Ligue 1 match played since March 8th. The season was cut short following the coronavirus pandemic, crowning PSG champions and seeing St Etienne narrowly avoid relegation.

Coming into this match cold, St. Etienne will like their chances of an upset. As the odds below show, however, they are massive underdogs against PSG’s team of stars.

Previous Meetings

Having had vastly contrasting league seasons, it isn’t a surprise that PSG won both matchups in Ligue 1 this term. It was a 4-0 victory in September in the capital, but St. Etienne were much more competitive in the second meeting. A weakened PSG (albeit still with Kylian Mbappe starting) had more ball than their hosts in their February match, yet they both registered 11 shots.

PSG had to wait until the 73rd minute for Mbappe to break through to secure a 1-0 win.

The last time St. Etienne avoided defeat against PSG was April 2018, when a first-half red card from Presnel Kimpembe allowed St. Etienne to play their way into the game and score a second-half equalizer. They have lost to nil in five of their last six matches with Ligue’s 1 dominant force.

PSG’s Trophy Run

PSG play the Coupe de France final on July 24th. A week later they meet Lyon in the Coupe de la Ligue final. Next month, they will be in Champions League action. This is an intense period for the club after months without competitive matches – it could prove to be the best few weeks in the history of PSG.

They prepared for their streak with a 7-0 thumping of Waasland-Beveren. Neymar admitted to being concerned about injury in the match, but crucially for Thomas Tuchel, his first-teamers came through unscathed. Neymar made just 22 appearances in all competitions for his club this season. Having him available for this trophy push is huge.

Mbappe and Mauro Icardi both featured. Seldom has Tuchel been able to name all three of his superstar forwards. He will have that opportunity against St. Etienne, who conceded the third-most goals in the truncated Ligue 1 campaign.

Find PSG Value

For all the variables, for the uncertainty of everything in sport right now, it is impossible to see anything other than a PSG win. This match could just prove to be an extra warm-up as they ramp up for the clash with Atalanta in the Champions League, which is where the success of this season will really be defined.

Icardi, Neymar and Mbappe are an irresistible attacking force. No defense in Europe will be able stop them, and St. Etienne are unlikely to be able to halt the supply from midfield.

A heavy PSG win is on the cards. The spread at -2 presents value.

Picks: PSG -2 (+125), PSG to win 4-0 (+1000), PSG to score a penalty (+215)
