This Wednesday, German football is in store for a proper domestic cup tie between RB Leipzig and Wolfsburg. It is only the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal, but it does not take away the fact that teams currently sit in second and third place in the Bundesliga, respectfully.

Wolfsburg is only four points off their domestic point total from last year with 11 matches remaining. Oliver Glasner’s side is deceivingly talented and they have been on quite a run of form as well, making this not an easy task for Leipzig.

Wolfsburg won the DFB-Pokal in 2015, while Leipzig were runners-up just two years ago. Therefore, this is a competition both clubs want to lift a trophy in come the beginning of summer. However, Wolfsburg’s job as underdogs is cut out for them. RB Leipzig’s only recent loss came at the hands of Liverpool in the Champions League at a neutral ground, which is a hard ask for any team. Julian Nagelsmann’s team looks like they will compete with Bayern until the end for the Bundesliga, but is this their most realistic path to silverware? The winner of this match will play the winner of Borussia Monchengladbach vs Borussia Dortmund which takes place on Tuesday.

RB Leipzig Looks to Make it Three in a Row

After two wins against Hertha Berlin and Borussia Monchengladbach, RB Leipzig should be going into this match with a heap of confidence. Sure, they had a slip up against a struggling Liverpool side in the Champions League, but, they have only lost three matches since November 20th, the other two coming against Dortmund and Mainz. This can be contributed to how well-rounded RB Leipzig are as a squad.

In fact, they have six players with four or more goals this season, including Christopher Nkunku, Angelino, Willi Orban, Marcel Sabitzer, Yussuf Poulsen and Emil Forsburg.

Furthermore, their defense has only conceded 20 times this season in the Bundesliga. Dayot Upamecano has been sensational in the middle, and he will make it extremely hard for Wolfsburg to score on Wednesday. Due to the fact Wolfsburg have one primary goalscorer in Wout Weghorst, expect Upamecano to be marking him for the full ninety.

Wolfsburg’s Looks for its Ninth Straight Clean Sheet

While RB Leipzig’s defense is worrisome, Wolfsburg’s might be even better. The last goal Wolfsburg conceded was actually at the hands of RB Leipzig in a two-all draw in January. They somehow have only let in 19 goals in their domestic campaign, and it makes you wonder if the two defenses will just equal each other out in this matchup.

However, one thing must be understood. Wolfsburg are very heavy underdogs to win, but in reality, there is not much between these two sides. Four out of their last five head-to-head matches have ended in a draw, with the only lone result going in favor of Leipzig by a score of 6-1. Finally, when you have a scorer like Weghorst in your side, anything can happen, especially in a cup tie.

RB Leipzig vs Wolfsburg DFB-Pokal Best Bet

Overall, the best bet for this match is the Wolfsburg moneyline at +260. For what it is worth, this bet has tremendous value for a side that has literally not conceded a goal in over a month of play. Only five points separate them in the Bundesliga table and Leipzig are only favored because of their overall talent and success in recent years.

While Weghorst might be tightly marked as the target man, this provides opportunities for other Wolfsburg players like Ridle Baku and Renato Steffen to make a difference going forward. Both sides are extremely skilled and this match will be a great watch for neutrals, but I think Wolfsburg grabs a win and advances to the semifinals of the DFB-Pokal.

My Pick: Wolfsburg moneyline (+260)
