Real Madrid Still the Team to Beat

It has not been an easy season for Real Madrid, who have suffered plenty of off-field problems, but on the pitch they are now the team to beat in La Liga. Their lead is a slender one and for most of the campaign they have been chasing Real Sociedad but, crucially, Carlo Ancelotti’s side recorded an important 4-1 away win at Granada last weekend while Sociedad was drawing.

Los Blancos have now won three league games on the spin and four of their last five, and a win over Sevilla would put down a real marker for the important weeks and months ahead. With Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid coming up in their next three league games and, in between, a Champions League game against Inter Milan, Ancelotti’s men are approaching a crucial spell of the campaign – one that will go a long way to determining the direction of travel. Defeat here would not only hinder their own progress but would see Sevilla leapfrog them in the table.

Job Done in Champions League

Real’s Champions League campaign has also been a good one. They currently sit atop Group D with four wins and a draw from their five games and have already qualified for the knockout phase. A win or a draw against Inter will be enough to win the group and ensure a seeding in the draw for the knockout phase.

The good news for Real Madrid is that they have a very good recent record against Sevilla and have won four of the last five games between the two. A positive for the visitors however is that this equivalent game last season ended 2-2 – a result they would happily take.

Unbeaten in Six in La Liga

Sevilla’s fine season has taken them into the heart of the La Liga title race and a win here could take them to the top of the table. Julen Lopetegui’s team has been successfully competing on two fronts and in midweek they recorded an excellent 2-0 win over Wolfsburg in the Champions League; a result that leaves them with still a chance to make it into the UCL’s knockout phase.

In La Liga, they missed a chance last weekend to heap pressure on Real Madrid and Real Sociedad when held 2-2 by Alaves but still remain unbeaten in six league games – four of those wins. Defensively they have been solid, conceding just nine goals in their 13 games, and have lost just once – a 1-0 away at Granada.

Good Away Form for Sevilla

With Atletico Madrid and Barcelona both enduring difficult seasons, for a whole variety of reasons, it is telling that Sevilla and Real Sociedad have emerged as Real Madrid’s main contenders for the La Liga title. As mentioned above, Los Nervionenses do not have a good record at the Bernabeu – they have not won there since December 2008 – but their away form is good, having picked up seven points from their last three away trips in La Liga.

Real Madrid vs Sevilla Prediction

Despite Sevilla flying high in the table and having a good record away from home, every trip to the Bernabeu is a daunting one. This will be no different, especially with Real starting to find some momentum, but this is a good Sevilla team – one that can defend when under pressure.

For that reason, I can see them sneaking a draw here to keep the gap between them and Real just two points. The value is with the low-scoring draw.

Picks: Real Madrid and Sevilla to draw (+320) / Real Madrid and Sevilla to draw 1-1 (+750)
