Over/Under and Spread

Well worth noting here is that Caesars have listed ‘over 2.5 goals’ in plus money at a tempting +120, and under 2.5 at -150, suggesting that they expect a tight, low-scoring game.

Tigres vs Atlas

Tigres come into this off the back of two good wins after initially losing the opening game of their campaign against Cruz Azul. But they were quickly able to put that 3-2 home defeat behind them and responded with a 1-0 away win over Mazatlan and then a 1-0 home win over Club Tijuana at the weekend.

Even in these early stages of the campaign they look well placed to repeat their second-place finish in the regular season table of the 2021-22 Clausura – the other part of the Mexican soccer season. In the second phase of that Clausura – the playoffs – they made it through the quarterfinals but lost in the semis to Sunday’s opponents, Atlas.

Controversy in Playoff Semifinal

The last time these two met was in the semifinal mentioned above and was a controversial affair. The first leg was won by 3-0 by Atlas on their home patch and they seemingly looked destined for the final, but an outstanding performance by Tigres in the second leg saw them take it to the wire.

While their 4-2 win in San Nicolás de los Garza – their home city – was not quite enough to take the tie to extra-time, their four goals were later wiped out by the Mexican FA after it was revealed they had nine foreign players on the field when only permitted a maximum of eight

Lukewarm Start for Clausura Champions

Atlas’ lukewarm start to the season will be no cause for concern at the moment, but the current Clausura champions – they beat Pachuca 3-2 on aggregate in the two-legged final –  will want to get another win on the board as soon as possible. Their surprise Clausura win back in May was just the third Liga MX title in their club’s history, so they will be keen to maintain that level and win more trophies.

That win has also raised their profile and now teams will see a win over the current champions as a badge of honor, making this a tricky campaign for them, but their good 3-2 home win over Cruz Azul last weekend will have restored some belief.

Atlas Looking for Back-to-Back Wins

Los Rojinegros need back-to-back wins to get this campaign properly up and running, and with the core of their Clausura-winning squad still with the club, they have the players to do just that.

If they can rediscover the good away form they enjoyed in the first half of 2022, they could get something from this game.

Tigres vs Atlas Team Lineups and Injuries

Tigres Projected Lineup: Guzman, Aquino, Lichnovsky, Reyes, Ahgulo, Thauvin, Pizarro, Vigon, Fulgencio, Gignac, Lopez.

Tigres Injuries: None.

Atlas Projected Lineup: Vargas, Santamaria, Nervo, Aguilera, Abella, Zandivar, Rocha, Reyes, Herrera, Ocejo, Quinones.

Atlas Injuries: Manotas.

Tigres vs Atlas  Pick

This will, for me, be a closer game than the bookies are suggesting. Atlas are current Clausura champions for a reason and, while this campaign has so far been a slow-burner for them, they still have quality in their squad.

There’s little value here in the home win but at +325 the away win offers plenty. I believe Atlas have enough in their tank to upset the form book.

Pick: Atlas to win (+325)
