Trinidad and Tobago vs El Salvador clash in the CONCACAF Gold Cup’s Group A, Matchday 2, on Wednesday, July 14, at 7:30 pm EST in the Toyota Stadium, Dallas.

Trinidad and Tobago Nab Brilliant Point Against the Champions

Trinidad and Tobago’s tournament got off to something of a flier even though it was a goalless draw. Few expected them to get anything from their opener against the defending Gold Cup champions, Mexico, but an ultra-solid defensive effort saw them emerge with a point in the most unlikely of circumstances. So solid was the T&T defense, despite them only having 18-percent of possession in the game, goalkeeper Marvin Phillip was only forced to make seven saves – a quite monumental effort from those in front of him.

Equally, manager Angus Eve will know that in order to progress in this competition his team needs to have more of the ball and also needs to find a way to have more than four shots (none of which were on target against Mexico). A similarly defensive performance against El Salvador may not be enough for them to get in the group’s top two, and they need to be a bit more adventurous tonight and build on the confidence they have built up after going unbeaten in seven.

El Salvador in Good Shape

El Salvador comes into this one in good shape after the 2-0 win over Guatemala and goes into the game in the knowledge they have a very good recent record against T&T. Against Guatemala, they had to be patient, but their patience was rewarded when goals in the 81st minute (Alex Roldan) and the 96th (Joaquin Rivas) secured their win and a good solid start to the tournament.

It was a deserved victory, however, and while having enjoyed 69-percent of the possession, they also had 21 shots in the game compared to Guatemala’s six. Patience may again be required for Hugo Perez’s team against tonight’s opponents.

A Start for Molino?

In terms of which players to look out for, Phillip’s in the T&T goal will again need to be in good form, just as the back-four in front of him will need to be at their best against a useful El Salvador attack. In attack for T&T, we may see some changes and it is possible that Columbus Crew striker Kevin Molino will start after a decent second-half cameo against Mexico in difficult circumstances.

For El Salvador, midfielder Alex Roldan, of the Seattle Sounders, made a big impact on his national team debut, scoring the first goal and generally having a good game against Guatemala, while substitute Joaquin Rivas has given himself a chance to start the game after coming off the bench to score the second goal.

Trinidad and Tobago vs El Salvador Best Bets

Trinidad and Tobago’s confidence will be sky high after shutting out Mexico but there is an expectation that, while they are a naturally defensive unit, they will need to be a bit more expansive against El Salvador. Whether they have the players to be more expansive is a different question but any team that has gone seven games without defeat is going to be a tough opponent.

El Salvador though looks player-for-player stronger and so, for me, a narrow win for the El Salvadorians looks the most likely outcome. A 1-0 win at +525 looks decent value, but with the straight win still in plus-money, that too is well worth a look.
