Better Times Ahead for Valencia?

Valencia’s 13th-place finish last season was their worst since 1987-88, and amid a season of off-field turmoil in which the club struggled with the financial impact of the pandemic, there was much understandable anger from their fans. A 3-2 defeat by Barcelona at the beginning of May was the final straw for the Valencia board and head coach Javi Gracia was sacked and he was replaced by former Getafe boss Jose Bordalas, who arrived on a two-year deal.

Only One New Face for Bordalas

As a result of the club’s financial problems, Bordalas has been limited in the work he has been able to do in this summer’s transfer window, although he has brought in Omar Alderete on loan from Hertha Berlin and, crucially, has so far been able to keep hold of the club’s key players from last season.

In this new campaign, Valencia has to balance the off-field issues with improved performances on the pitch, and in doing so they need desperately to do better than their 10-13-15 record in 2020-21. Fifteen defeats in 38 league games are just not good enough for a club of Valencia’s stature; a club that has won La Liga on six occasions.

The one thing Los Che’s can cling on to, however, is some fairly decent home form in 2020-21 where they picked up 31 points from 19 games, in a total points haul of 43. Their problems were mainly away from home – where they had the second-worst away record – and so they will be grateful that this season begins on their home patch.

Better Than 15th for Getafe?

Getafe, whose expectations are generally considerably lower than Valencia’s, will still have been disappointed with their modest return of 38 points last season; a total that saw them finish in 15th – two places adrift of tonight’s opponents and just four clear of the relegation zone.

While the Madrid club is a relative newcomer to La Liga – having only returned to the Spanish top flight in 2017 – they have surprised many along the way with finishes of eighth, fifth, and eighth in their first three seasons. To drop down to 15th last season was seen as a setback to their upward progress.

With last season’s head coach, Bordalas, departing for tonight’s opponents over the summer, a new face arrived in the dugout in the form of José Miguel González, better known as Michel, who returned for his second spell in charge. The former Real Madrid midfielder wasted no time in getting to work and has been very busy over the summer in the transfer market.

While he has lost some big names in Francisco Portillo, Angel Rodriguez, and Xabi Etxeita, he has brought in no less than seven players – Carles Alena, Sandro Ramirez, Stefan Mitrovic, Dario Poveda, Diego Conde, Vitolo and Jose Macias – all of whom have arrived on either permanent deals or season-long loans. This Getafe team will have a very different look, feel, and playing style to the one that finished 15th.

Getafe’s away form last term was poor – collecting just 13 points on their travels –  but they at least head into this game in a positive mood after ending their pre-season with a comfortable 2-0 win over Premier League Brighton.

Valencia vs Getafe Best Bet

While the Madrid team has the momentum that comes with a good pre-season, Valencia’s good record at the Mestalla could be the key here. Even in a spirit-crushing campaign last time out, they still managed to maintain some good home form and score several goals, and with fans inside the stadium, there will be a noisy, boisterous atmosphere. Getafe’s ordinary away form also comes into play here, so the value is with the plus-money home win.

Pick: Valencia to win (+150)
