Wolverhampton Wanderers play host to Southampton in England’s FA Cup Fifth Round on Thursday in a tie which will provide a welcome break from struggles in the Premier League for both teams. This Wolverhampton vs Southampton match takes place at 12:30 pm EST.

Southampton have lost five successive EPL fixtures and are still smarting after a 9-0 thrashing by Manchester United at Old Trafford on February 2.

In a disappointing season after their seventh-placed finish in 2019-20, Wolves have taken just five points from their last six EPL outings. They have won only once in their last ten league games.

So the knockout competition offers both sides some relief from their main troubles. It also hands them the opportunity of claiming a confidence-boosting place in the quarterfinals.

This is a tough one to call given the poor form of both teams and the fact they drew 1-1 in their last meeting in the EPL at Wolves on November 23.

At DraftKings, the oddsmakers make Wolves favorites for a home win at +125. For Southampton, the price is +220 with the draw after 90 minutes at +230. The best offer here looks to be the draw.

At least both teams have overcome fellow Premier League opponents during their route to the Fifth Round.

In the Third Round, Wolves defeated EPL side Crystal Palace 1-0. They then won 1-0 in a tricky Fourth Round tie against non-league Chorley.

Defeat of Cup Holders Arsenal

League One side Shrewsbury Town were beaten 2-0 by Southampton in the Third Round. Ralf Hassenhutl’s Southampton team then won 1-0 at home against the holders Arsenal in the Fourth Round.

There were high hopes for Wolves at the start of the season. But they have been severely hampered by the injury absence of their leading striker, the Mexican Raul Jimenez.

He has scored 86 goals during his three seasons with the Midlands club. However,  he has not played since he suffered a fractured skull in a collision of heads with Arsenal’s David Luiz on November 29.

Since then, the side managed by the Portugueses Nuno Espirito Santo has managed to score only 12 times in 11 league matches.

Wolves  have conceded only two goals in the last four games – with their most recent result a 0-0 draw at home against Leicester City last Sunday.

Against that, they have steadied a spate of defensive problems that hit them around the turn of the year.

An important 2-1 victory at home against Arsenal had come before that.

The two-match unbeaten run has steadied things a little with the team in 14th place in the EPL table.

Still, the defeat of Arsenal was only Wolves’ second win in 11 league fixtures.

Southampton had climbed as high as third place in mid-December after an impressive run of only one defeat in 11 league games. They are now 12th.

Things were also looking bright after they scored a notable 1-0 home win against champions Liverpool on January 4.

Alarming Slump in Form

Their slump which has followed has been an alarming one.

In the run of five straight defeats since then, they have scored only three times.

Meanwhile, they have conceded 18 times in that spell.

That 9-0 defeat at Manchester United equaled the record worst setback in the history of the Premier League.

What is more, it was the second time in 16 months that Southampton had been thrashed by that scoreline – having also succumbed 9-0 at home against Leicester City in October 2019.

There were mitigating factors at Old Trafford because Austrian coach Hassenhutl’s team was severely depleted by injuries.

The misery continued for Southampton with a 3-2 defeat away at Newcastle in their most recent fixture last Saturday.

Teenager Axel Jankewitz was then sent off only two minutes into his EPL debut.

A lack of goals has been a problem along with all the defensive troubles – with striker Danny Ings scoring just once in his last ten EPL games.

Historically, Southampton scored one of the most notable FA Cup final wins in the competition’s history in 1976.

As a Second Division club, they beat Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley.

There have been four FA Cup triumphs for Wolves with the last one in 1960.

Pick: Draw +230
