Pavlyuchenkova Upsets Rybakina

About a decade in the making, the Russian rallied and battled in her quarterfinal match to defeat Rybakina 6(2)-7(7), 6-2, 9-7, and earn her spot in her first Major semifinal.

Rybakina, who was coming off a win against Serena Williams, started off very strong. The 21-year old recorded 11 winners within the first five games to lead 4-1. It wasn’t long until Pavlyuchenkova was able to even it out to 4-4. Despite losing that first set, the 29-year old came out strong, and was able to snag the second set to force a tie break.

The third set was much more back and forth, and was really anyone’s game, but Pavlyuchenkova was able to record 44 winners throughout the match, which was the number needed to earn her spot in the semifinals, as her opponent double faulted to end the match.

Zidanšek’s Maiden Grand Slam Semifinal

Unseeded and World No. 85 Zidanšek earned her place in the semi’s at the French Open after defeating Paula Badosa 7-5, 4-6, 8-6. Prior to the French Open, the 23-year old had yet to advance past the second round of a Grand Slam.

Zidanšek started her tournament off with a big win over sixth seed Bianca Andreescu, and hasn’t looked back. But Badosa was going to be a tough opponent, the Spaniard entered with a WTA-leading 17-2 record on clay this year.

Badosa seemed to be struggling with her serve, recording eight double faults, to Zidanšek’s three. On top on that Zidanšek’s serving was actually a strength of hers during the match. Badosa continued to fight and managed to take the second set to force a tiebreak, but Zidanšek did control the tone for majority of the time. And after about two and a half hours, she claimed her well deserved spot in the final four in Paris.

Pavlyuchenkova and Zidanšek enter this match having never played each other before. With not much to go off of, let’s see how they played this year. The 23-year old has a better record on the year than Pavlyuchenkova, but leading up to the French Open Pavlyuchenkova had a strong showing in Madrid, setting herself up for success here in Paris.

This is going to be an interesting match. Not necessarily the two players that were expected to be here, but two that will provide us with exciting tennis.

I would say we’re more familiar with Pavlyuchenkova’s playing style as of late, due to her strong showing at the Madrid Open leading up to Paris. The Russian has a very powerful forehand, and enjoys hitting strong groundstrokes. But what makes this very interesting is Zidanšek’s style of play is quite suited for the surface. She very quick, and she herself has a very strong forehand.

Yes, Pavlyuchenkova has more overall experience heading into this match, but the reality is, neither player has experience in a Grand Slam semifinal match. The winner of this match will be who is more mentally tough. I do think the Russian’s career experience does allow her to potentially have the edge here, as she has more bigger matches until her belt, despite it never being a Grand Slam semifinal.
