Dominic Thiem’s Road to the Semifinals

Thiem made history on Wednesday night becoming the first Austrian to reach the semifinals of the US Open. Thiem beat Australia’s Alex de Minaur in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. Playing with the stadium roof closed, Thiem dominated the entire quarterfinal match. He recorded 43 winners, 11 aces, as well as 31 unforced errors. He was able to hold his opponent to winning just 49 percent of points behind his first serve.

During his quarterfinal match, Thiem played an incredible baseline game, and his big serve was tough to return for de Minaur. In the third set, Thiem allowed de Minaur to gain some momentum, but that didn’t last long, as Thiem was able to reset, break his opponent, and serve him out, to ultimately win.

Leading up to this semifinals match, Thiem has only given up one set all tournament and has only lost just nine games in the past five sets. Over the course of this year’s US Open, he has broken his opponents 18 times.

Daniil Medvedev’s Road to the Semifinals

The 2019 US Open runner up is looking to book his ticket to his second straight final. Medvedev defeated fellow Russian Andrey Rublev in straight sets, winning 7-6(6), 6-3, 7-6(5), securing himself a spot in his second career major semifinal. He didn’t face a break point all match and recorded 51 winners.

In his five matches leading up to the semifinals, Medvedev has saved six of nine break points, and has won 65 of 68 service games, having only been broken three times. He’s played both tremendous defense and offense all tournament, with much control over his forehand and backhand.

Head-to-Head

These two players have seen each other three times before, with Thiem holding the edge with a 2-1 record. Although, the last time they saw each other was last August on an outdoor hard court where Medvedev won in straight sets. Despite Thiem having two wins against Medvedev, Medvedev has the upper hand at the US Open, on the hard court.

Medvedev
3 ATP Standing 5
26 Age 24
2 Head-to-Head Wins 1

In 2020, Medvedev boasts an impressive 14-3 record on hard court, showing it’s probably his most favorable surface to compete on.  Although this won’t be an easy feat for either player, Medvedev is looking to be the first player to win the US Open without giving up a set since Neale Fraser did it in 1960.

No one left has reached more Grand Slam finals than Thiem, with three. But Medvedev is showing no signs of weakness on the hard court surface, dominating every opponent he’s faced. Both players are well experienced and familiar with a Grand Slam semifinal at this point in their careers. This is a blockbuster semifinal between two talented players. Expect it to go the distance, as it’ll be a battle.

Best Bet: [3] Medevedev (-136)
