  • Both players are coming off upset wins against their round of 16 opponents
  • See below for the odds for this match and a preview of how they got here

Truthfully, this is not the quarterfinal matchup that I was expecting to write about. When you have the likes of Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev competing against unseeded or a lower-ranked player, you expect that they will be moving onto the next round. Evans and Goffin had other plans for this tournament. Both players defeated their higher-seeded and ranked opponents in straight sets.

Evans and Goffin are set to take to the court Friday, April 16th at 6:20 AM ET for their quarterfinal match.

Take a look at the odds below and our best bet analysis for this quarterfinal match.

Evans Stuns Djokovic

Evans entered the week looking for his first tour-level win on clay since 2017, and now the Brit leads his head-to-head record against World No. 1 Djokovic, 1-0. The 30-year old ended Djokovic’s perfect 10-0 start to the year in a 6-4, 7-5 win, which earned him a spot in the final eight at the Monte Carlo Masters.

With a 7-17 record on clay, this is not his favored surface. But the Brit had a quick start to his match against Djokovic, going up 3-0 quickly in the first set. Never to be counted out, the World No. 1 was able to even it out to 4-4 at one point in the first set but wasn’t able to hold Evans off. But Djokovic was able to turn the tables a bit as he had a strong start to the second set, going up 3-0 himself and gaining what looked to be some momentum. But he, unfortunately, fell flat once again.

Evans was able to record 21 winners with only 22 errors, while his opponent managed 45 unforced errors to only 28 winners. Truly, an uncharacteristic match for Djokovic who also managed four double faults and only a 57 first-serve percentage. But it doesn’t matter. Evans saw the opportunity and took full control over the match, ending in a well-deserved win.

Evans earned his spot in his first ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal and he’ll look to take on No. 11 seed Goffin who also upset his opponent.

Goffin Upsets Zverev

Goffin is coming off an upset of his own. He went on to defeat No. 5 seed Zverev 6-4, 7-6(7) in just under two hours. With this win, he’s evened out the head-to-head series against Zverev 2-2, as he earned himself a spot in his 12th ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal and his first quarterfinal here since 2018.

Goffin was able to save all six breakpoints he faced in the match, and record the only break of the match, which was at 3-3 in the first set. The Belgian player outplayed his opponent and will look to carry this momentum into his quarterfinal match against Evans.

Head-to-Head

The one and only time these two players have faced each other was at the 2020 ATP Cup in Australia, where Evans won in straight sets. Despite the win, Goffin has more experience under his belt, which includes five career titles to Evans’ one.

Evans vs Goffin Best Bet

Expect confidence levels to be at an all-time high from both players coming into this match. This could either work in their favor or not. We’ve seen many players come into a match after a big win, and not be able to focus and deliver again.

Both of these players also play a relatively similar game. They’re pretty quick on the court and have a good return game. Neither player was playing extremely well prior to this week, but have made headlines with their level of play and intensity this week.

Yes, Evans has defeated higher-seeded and ranked players, but I’m going to give Goffin the edge due to his overall experience, and his play on clay. Look for Goffin to earn his spot in the final four, but don’t be surprised if Evans is able to take a set off of him.

The Pick: Goffin (-157); 2-1 (+325)
