Duckworth Overcoming the Odds

Certainly, coming into this tournament, there wouldn’t have been many backing Duckworth to still be around at this stage. He’s defying the odds, though, by reaching his first Masters 1000 quarterfinals. This is Duckworth’s 11th year on the ATP Tour.

When he arrived in Paris, world #55 Duckworth was sporting a 1-4 record through his previous five matches. This is the first time the Aussie has been through to the final eight of a tournament since Sofia in early October. That performance came immediately on the heels of Duckworth’s first appearance in an ATP final. He lost to South Korea’s Soonwoo Kwan in the final at Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan on September 26th.

Against Popyrin, Duckworth rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the first set to win 7-6(6), 6-4. The match lasted one hour and 47 minutes. His tiebreaker win to capture the first set seemed to prove inspirational to the 29-year-old Duckworth. He won the first four games of the second set.

Duckworth becomes the first Australian to reach an ATP Masters 1000 singles quarterfinal since Matthew Ebden did so at Shanghai in 2018. Looking at the big picture, the Australian has now won 15 of his past 20 matches. His performance in Paris is projecting the likelihood that Duckworth will be moving into the top-50 of the world rankings for the first time in his career.

Hurkacz So Good So Far

Hurkacz also required the donning of his rally cap to overcome Koepfer 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in two hours and six minutes. Koepfer had already conquered former world #1 Andy Murray and world #12 Felix Auger-Aliassime to get through to his matchup against top-10 opponent Hurkacz.

The match was 2-2 in the third set when Koepfer hit a backhand wide to drop the fifth game. That unforced error created an opening for Hurkacz, who won the next three games to claim the set and the match.

It was Hurkacz’s 35th match win of the year. Those victories include a trio of ATP titles.

The win was also providing a significant boost to Hurkacz’s bid to claim a place in the Nitto ATP Finals. He currently sits in the eighth and final automatic qualification spot with 3,135 points. Hurkacz is 120 points ahead of ninth-placed Italian Jannik Sinner. Sinner lost to Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the round of 32 at Paris on Wednesday.

Prime Time Hurkacz Too Much for Duckworth

Clearly, Duckworth is currently at the top of his game. However, Hurkacz has been displaying all season that he’s at peak performance when the elite competitions of men’s tennis are up for grabs.

In Grand Slam and Masters 1000 events this year, the Polish star is 21-10. That’s a .677 winning percentage. He’s won one title, reached another semifinal and has gone as far as the quarterfinals in three other events.

The Aussie did claim a top-20 win in Paris when he toppled #14 seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the round of 64. However, Hurkacz’s power game will prove too much for Duckworth to overcome.
